If any EU registered private/domestic vehicle is imported into the U.K. & matriculated onto U.K. registration plates, then I believe all that is charged are the administration fees, no tax as it will have been paid in the country of origin. That’s fair.

EU has a long running dispute with the Portugal due to their unfair taxation system, however the yearly fine the EU impose is far less than the revenue gained by Portugal.

Just been playing with the Portugal government tax calculator, to import my 2010 180biturbo California into Portugal and have it on Portugal plates would be close on 21000 euros tax, plus 1250 euros admin, along with any required upgrades to the vehicle, lights etc.

New & used vehicles are expensive out here as new & used imported, are charged this ISV tax, made up of extra vehicle tax/custom tax/Co2 emissions tax. Similarly any foreign vehicle caught in Portugal overstaying the 183 days a year allowable period, is seized, and the owner given the choice of matriculation and paying the ISV tax OR handing over the keys of the vehicle. They are not allowed to remove the vehicle from Portugal.

The onus is on the owner to prove the vehicle has been in Portugal for less than 183 days in any yearly period.

Beware, if your planning a long term stay with your Cali in Portugal.
