The warning light that suggests something is wrong with the Catalytic Converter keeps coming on.

VW Service keep finding a 'fault', fix it but with a day or so, the light is back on.

The van drives absolutely fine as far as I can tell (still fairly new to them so not sure what 'normal' is).

However, I do know from previous VWs (and my Mini) that a persistent light means battery.

There is what looks like a DOT number stamped into one of the terminals. 4717. I assume that's week and year of manufacture?

It's a Varta battery.

If so, it's probably nearing end of life.

I have the ctek mxs 5.0 charger for when the van hasn't been used or won't be used for a while, so will see if that makes any difference but i suspect I am simply delaying the inevitable.

You need to find out what the Diagnostic Codes are. If the vehicle starts OK and doesn't struggle to start then it might not be the battery. Get a Carista or OBD11 dongle that fits the OBD port under the dash, download the software and do a vehicle scan. Then you should know the problem to be sorted. The dashboard warning light covers a number of causes and is not specific.

My Varta starter battery was from 44/09. I only changed it last year in november. This means the battery was 14 years old. I never had a check engine light for that battery, and it was close to dead in the end.
You will have to find out the fault codes to determine the direction of the fault.

Broken sensor perhaps?? You need to spend £50 on a VW OBD code reader.

I had a DPF sensor break and drove around like that for 2 1/2 years as I knew it was the sensor, not the DPF. I finally fixed it.

Just set up the Carista.

Basic OBD2:
U02A2 (Pending) (Confirmed) - Manufacturer-specific code
(tap to search)
U05A3 (Pending) - Manufacturer-specific code
(tap to search)

Engine:
32165 - Lost Communication with Reductant Quality Module
32171 - Invalid Data Received From Reductant Quality Module

Does using the Carista invalidate any warranty?

No.

Then I google the results.

Seems may be something to do with Adblue!? Or a faulty sensor. Tbh I would google search a good VW specialist with reviews over 4.3. Read some of the reviews. Take it there and never return to the VW dealer that took your money and failed to fix it.

I am not one of the mechanics here but I don’t think it’s your battery.

Might help:

The other code - only comes up with info regarding Merceded Ad Blue system - but surely the dealer should be able to diagnose this.

That was certainly my conclusion, but it's on a volkswagen warranty.

I like how they keep decribing it as a car.
