Guidance on campsites re-opening

I hope we follow places like Holland and allow Californias.
fingers crossed for 4th July

I assume we all received this but in case anyone missed it, so looks like no campervans allowed

Dear member,
The Caravan and Motorhome Club represents a million members and operates the largest network of campsites in the UK. The Club has been in existence since 1907 and has over 200 Club operated locations and a further 2,300 smaller sites (Certificated Locations) operated mostly by farmers and small rural businesses. This means that holiday makers do not have to travel large distances to find a campsite, on average there is a site every 20 square miles. In normal circumstances visitors to these sites spend some £700,000,000 pa in rural communities. However our members can follow their leisure activity in a self-contained manner, with all of their own supplies and amenities within their outfit, thereby having a low impact on the area they visit. The average party size of our members is 2.7 people from the same household and on average they stay for a few days at a time.
It has been heartening to see the recognition from Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, and Professor Van-Tam that careful thought and consideration is being given to the resumption of outdoor holidays.
The Caravan and Motorhome Club is liaising with Visit Britain, Tourism Alliance and other campsite operators to ensure best practice operating, cleansing and safety protocols are developed to ensure we are COVID Secure when we are able to reopen campsites. In fact the Club and its sites network was already operating with adapted protocols to observe social distancing guidelines, reduced common areas and increased cleaning of all shared facilities pre lockdown and closure.
Be assured we are closely following all relevant Government and public health bodies’ advice and guidance to adapt or update our processes on site, which currently provide for:

  • vehicle pitches already spaced at least 6m apart, thus inherently enabling family groups to maintain current social distancing guidelines
  • rigorous cleaning of all communal areas and we will increase the number of times they are cleaned, in particular the significant touchpoints and limit the amount of people who can use the amenities at any one time
  • contactless check-in and clear markings on the floor in and near communal areas to ensure all visitors to our campsites can easily maintain distancing guidelines while enjoying their holiday
  • communal areas (water, waste and refuse points etc) will be subject to a queue system in line with the current social distancing guidance of 2m distance. This will be marked on the floor
  • Club restaurants, bars, swimming pools, games rooms and social areas will remain closed until otherwise advised. Mobile (take away) catering units will be available on some sites with social distancing rules in place while queueing
  • information provided to site visitors to remind them of social distancing whilst visiting local amenities
The benefits of outdoor holidays were highlighted in a recent report from the UK Caravan and Camping Alliance, which concluded health and wellbeing had improved for visitors who reported doing more exercise and feeling more relaxed while on a holiday park or campsite.
The same report also confirms that holiday parks and campsites around the UK support 171,448 full-time employees – so not only are touring holidays hugely beneficial for individual wellbeing, they are a significant contributor to local economies and wider UK economy.
As a responsible members club, we actively encourage Club members to adhere to the Caravan Code, which ensures their vehicles are in good repair with particular attention is paid to those sections of the Highway Code relevant to trailer caravans. The club also reminds members to observe the Countryside Code relating to water, cleanliness, fire dangers, litter, public paths, gates, control of dogs, damage to crops, hedges, walls, trees and plants, livestock and wildlife.
The Caravan and Motorhome Club firmly believe that the touring industry is well placed to ably support the Government’s need to maintain its COVID-19 social distancing measures, provide reassurance to local communities with responsible behaviour and aid economic recovery, by reopening its sites at the earliest possible date.
I and my colleagues would very much welcome the opportunity to offer our experience and support on touring and camping to further inform Government and Public Health Authorities in these unprecedented times.
With our warmest regards,
Nick Lomas
Director General
Caravan and Motorhome Club

Guess tents typically won’t have sinks, showers or loos - nor will they have fresh or waste water tanks.

Looks like camping holidays are off the agenda this summer, even if they do open toilet blocks towards the end of the season, can you imagine how busy it will be

\I've just booked 10 days in September with the CAMC. Forever hopeful :)

Unfortunately neither do the majority of campervans, and I would be surprised if an external shower or toilet will be acceptable. There would be no need for campsites to police or check that. Just ban them and fill up with big whites and Caravans.

I wonder if everyone will remain enthusiastic now the weather is back to normal, been a miserable, cold, wet weekend here.

We had a lovely 24 mile bike ride on the tandem triplet today, following the River Thames from Greenwich to the Woolwich Ferry on the southern bank bike path and from North Woolwich back to Greenwich on the northern bike path (not so close to the bank). Left home at 11.10, returned home at 3.10, rain started at 3pm.

Fun can be had whatever the weather.

We avoid the coast when it’s stupid hot.
To many fools around when the sun comes out.
Much prefer a cooler day with cloud and sunny spells.

Looking good from 4th July

As usual the caravan and motorhome club are taking law into their own hands, there is no official government guidance on campsites yet. It is still 'maybe'. They are just trying to get your money, if the R rate increases again this will be delayed for sure

How are they trying to get your money? You don’t pay until arrival. Do you not think, just maybe, they’ve been given the ‘nod’.

They would have done a risk assessment which would have satisfied whoever it needed to satisfy in order to obtain a license so I agree with you, they obviously understand that they can open. I can't imagine any business of any description bringing all those staff in just to "wing it".

Anyway, I have a booking on the 6th July and starting to pack now!

The Sun’s alarmist take on campsite’s reopening.

C&M club aren’t guaranteeing toilet blocks yet but say they “intend to open” them on their website. Agree with Granny Jen, they won’t have gone this without reasonable understanding it will be ok.
We’ve made 5 site bookings from 12th for a period of over 3 weeks.....let’s get out there :bananadance2

I panicked today to book, thinking I’d missed the boat....can’t do Devon this year so it’s Braemar I’m aiming for....they took my details but won’t confirm my booking.....first time as 1 + 0 dog....its been a sad week.

In Slovenia and Croatia, the campsites are open now, normal social distancing is recommended, toilets open. Campsites are rather empty still, but it is early.

The rules and guidelines change day-to-day though. I work at the Belgian consulate, and we get lots of calls daily - Belgian citizens who booked their holiday when Slovenia opened borders, BUT a few days later demands a 14 day quarantine for almost anyone who travels here

I just don't get how the communal blocks can be made safe enough. The Camping and Caravanning Club say they will deep clean the blocks twice a day and then there will be two more supplementary cleans... In a hotel/guesthouse it is all far simpler, one deep clean per day and only you use the en-suit - simple. You can even bring you own cleaning stuff if you are very fussy! Campsites are a whole different matter. Maybe they will settle for closed toilet blocks and only self contained units.... In the end it will depend on the government and the scientific advice.

Sorry to hear that...

So very sorry to read this, we had been wondering how Dottie was getting on. Please accept our sincere condolences, such a heartbreaking time for you.
