A d.i.y. tip for water bottle

This is a guidance statement, not a legal requirement. The highway code is only a legal requirement if the rule contains a "must" or "must not"

Sorry @B J G , This quote supports my argument

Again a guidance statement, there is no "must" or "must not"

I don't think anyone is disagreeing that drinking or eating whilst driving could lead to careless driving but I haven't seen anything that says the act of drinking or eating while driving, on its own, is illegal.

As none of us (nor, almost certainly, any journalist) were actually in court to hear the prosecution's statement of circumstances we are none the wiser as to whether the vehicle or indeed the banana were under proper control. And as the defendant then admitted her guilt, the facts on that sadly will never have been put to the test at trial.

Moral of story might be that if you've done something silly on the road and get stopped and offered a fixed penalty or a course, it's not going to be to your financial advantage to instead opt to go to court BUT then plead guilty nonetheless (= fine of whatever + prosecution costs typically £85 + surcharge £34 + points on your licence).

Welsh gas.
if you wait till your thirsty to drink, you will very quickly end up dehydrated.
Do any sport or physical exercise, if you wait till you feel thirsty, it’s too late.
And rather than the quip re me missing out a nugget of information, maybe read the post, I said I should down 3 ltrs a day,

Sorry, but you are wrong on so many points.
I suggest you read up a little on human physiology, in particular water and electrolyte balance and kidney function.
Thirst is the bodies stimulus to injest water to avoid dehydration, not some fad that says you must drink X mls/hr otherwise You Die put about by the companies that make those handy water bottles with the nipple top so you can get your required intake on the running machine.

Both my son and daughter in law undertake ultra marathons and other extreme sports and neither follow or agree with that fallacy . You drink what is required, when it is required dictated by your body not some slick PR company .

Symptoms of dehydration in adults and children include:

  • feeling thirsty
  • dark yellow and strong-smelling pee
  • feeling dizzy or lightheaded
  • feeling tired
  • a dry mouth, lips and eyes
  • peeing little, and fewer than 4 times a day
Drink fluids when you feel any dehydration symptoms.

If you find it hard to drink because you feel sick or have been sick, start with small sips and then gradually drink more.

You can use a spoon to make it easier for your child to swallow the fluids.

You should drink enough during the day so your pee is a pale clear colour.

Drink when there's a higher risk of dehydrating. For example, if you're vomiting, sweating or you have diarrhoea.

direct from NHS web site, thirst is an actual symptom of dehydration, if your thirsty it’s because you hav3 not been taking on enough to start with. That’s unless you view the NHS as a slick PR company

And I will put money on fact you ultra marathon running son and daughter do not start any comp unless they are fully hydrated, and would also likely suggest that they don’t just use water but happily pay for what ever company produces there fave electrolite drink. Ask em! Do they wait until they feel thirsty before taking on hydration? or do they take it on before they show signs of dehydration? There is a reason you see sportsmen constantly taking on water.

I’m not going to continue as it is obvious you do not have an open mind.
After 40 + yrs working in Intensive Care and Anaesthetics , working with a University Sports Physiology Department , 5 yrs in the Royal Air Force working in/with Aviation and Survival Medicine. I think I have a little knowledge and experience of this subject.

Thirst is a natural, physiological trigger. If you respond to that trigger you will Never get dehydrated. If you don’t respond then you remain thirsty and get progressively more dehydrated.

As far as electrolyte drinks, most of those on the market are Snake Oil, good enough for the masses as they will do no harm.
The elite use personalised fluids matched to their own physiology, but plain water with a matched diet and electrolyte supplements can also do the same.

According to you the Mayo Clinic have obviously got it wrong.

Just lost any interest in your expertise now IAM are the same folk that allowed me to continue flying after my kidney stones, against there own protocol.
same organisation that could not or would not prescribe correct medication for gout (it was sorted immediately by civilian specialists)
IAM good at somethings shocking at others, and that’s from 30 years dealing with em.
Being a paid professional sportsman currently! Would rather follow advice of my own medical specialist.

How do I know if I'm drinking enough?

Your fluid intake is probably adequate if:

  • You rarely feel thirsty
ergo if you feel thirsty you are not drinking enough, extract from you4 Mayo link. Interesting you go to the Mayo Clinic rather than the NHS. which actually say the same thing “stay hydrated so you don’t feel thirsty”

Incorrect once again.
How have members of the human race coped all these years - when thirsty they drink. If they don't or can't drink when thirsty they can get dehydrated. How did we cope without bottled water in the past?

Do as you wish. It'd difficult believing the science when you are blindfolded to it.

Read the whole of the Mayo Clinic recommendations on which the NHS recommendations are based.

Drink fluids when you feel any dehydration symptoms. ie: when you are thirsty you drink.

No where does it state a normal, healthy person has to drink an additional 3L of water in addition to a normal diet/fluid intake determined by your normal energy and exercise requirements and your normal physiological responses/requirements to avoid dehydration.

A normal diet, including food and liquids, will provide the necessary nutrition and fluid requirements, NOT a normal diet + an additional 3L of fluids .

I know you've got kidney stones etc: That just means
you're not a normal healthy individual. :thumb
