Some pretty strange members on here....

Not only should people comment on posts they should start new threads to contribute to the forum.
I've been silent of late but now the ipad app is working again I can post again!
Hooray :thumb

I suppose I'd definitely fall under the spying category, Registered last year but only placed an order last week. The forums have been so helpful as a potential purchaser and I've probably spent the equivalent of a couple of days trawling through new and old posts.

Found it hard to contribute much until now though and probably until our Cali arrives later in the year. Not a big off topic scene on these boards and even those threads can still be quite camping oriented but looking forward to having more to say later this Summer - exciting times and thanks again to everyone for sharing so many experiences/tips, etc - I always wanted a camper but this forum made me want a Cali.

I like reading your posts Hotelcalifornia! Always fun, interesting and helpful!

We try to share as much as we can of our adventures around Switzerland, alhough we are pretty new to VW and T5 California.

So happy travelling, reading, posting and sharing to everyone! And if you pass by in CH, need intel - let us know!

Following this post made me think
Is there any risk to posting??
I recently posted a pic, with my number plate clearly visible.
I notice some hide the plates.
When I drive around anyone can see the number, so is there any need I haven't thaught of?
Our addresses are private arnt they?, as some do post when they are going away on holiday , when asking for advice.
What safety rules do people follow.?
My general rule is don't say exactly where you live. Don't give your full name or your families names. Don't post you reg plate (in case of cloning). Be selective about what you tell people you're doing / where you're going unless you know them and then PM them if you need to share details.

I've got a very obvious plate going on my Cali but I won't be acknowledging any "Cali spots' I'm afraid. I just want to keep a gap between the forum and 'real life'.

I will keep a gap between the forum and 'real life'.

That is a shame, the big part of us owning a Cali for us was for the VW scene and going to the meets and events, so far we have been to several club meets and met some loveley people and made some good friends that we keep in contact with.

You can still do that, just be careful.

I can see that Paranoia is catching.

Cloning of number plates, with the loss of tax discs and the increase in APNR cameras, only really works if the cloned plates are on the same type and colour of vehicle. But each to his own.
Professional car thiefs don't need to follow vehicles to find the registered address, they have other methods.
Likewise, ever googled your name? You would be surprised what information is out there. Especially if you have ever used Social Media or registered on any of a number of supposed secure sites. Registered for voting etc.
Those that want info about you or your family can get it if they want.

You just have to be aware of all these possibilities, and live your life accordingly.

I am going to the June club meet, you have got me worried? In what way do we need to be careful? This is my first meet
It's an open Internet forum. Just be careful about how much info you post about yourself. We've just had a parents talk at school about Internet safety for our girls and the rules are relevant for adults too. When Facebook was less secure there were burglaries of houses as anyone could find out that your were away. Nowadays people use private settings. I don't think it is possible on here to have closed groups so only people you know see your posts. Anyone can see the posts that you make on here.

Eileen, don't worry, the meets are perfectly safe.. I think the references were referring to posting information about yourself online that unscrupulous individuals can use to their benefit. Crime is crime, and the Internet has become a fantastic source of intelligence - whilst we can find out about what the best TV is in a Cali, the bad guys can also potentially find out which Calis have TV and where they will be at some point in time etc. None of this is new and don't get hung up about it. Just be sensible. If you wouldn't walk into a pub and announce something to a load of strangers, don't do it on a forum like this either...

For anyone interested in learning a bit more about Cyber security, there is a free course coming up in April courtesy of the OU and a really good Government initiative intended to try and make the UK a safer place to do business online. Details can be found here: https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/introduction-to-cyber-security

There is a great initiative intended for business too: http://www.cyberessentials.org/

And another aimed at home users with some great common sense advice: https://www.cyberstreetwise.com/

isn't a forum like a book, once written it's out there and readers respond how they feel. Some people will only use the site to sort out their problems, answers seem happily given, others contribute and like the opportunity to have their voice heard. It takes all sorts, nothing weird or ignorant about that.....

My OP said "strange" in a way i found it strange members registred in 2013 and no single post are reading today this forum.
The tread is getting off-topic;)
New members need to find thier way i agree and noting to worry or get paranoid if you not post to many personal things.
But if one have been reading this forum for a few years and had nothing to add whatever i concider it "strange"
For me a forum is charing things , even it is just chit-chat ....:D
I also joined as a "mostley just reading , member" , you need to get involved and afther a while addicted to this forum.

I find all forums a strange and sometimes hostile place, where people say things to others they would never say to their face, and as it is written word it is difficult to convey how the message was intended to be put across.
I am currently Caliless as we sold ours at the end of last year and we are just waiting for the summer sales rush to pass before ordering for a 2017 delivery. So I just browse the forum pick up all the T6 ordering tips, and as I have no experience of these issues keep quite.
There does seem to be a trend that people HAVE to comment on every post irrespective of having any experience of an issue or are qualified to do so, and then when people disagree or have a strong opinion opposite to theirs get very annoyed.
Addiction as mentioned above seems to be an very apt word.
So if you are looking for friendship, entertainment or get something off your chest then don't use a forum, instead go out in your Cali , meet some people , talk to them , laugh , drink and just chill.
Remember the Cali is a way of life , The forum on occasion just helps us live it.

before forums what did we do to socialise a hobby -- wave at someone who you thought was like minded. Now that could be strange.

It usually don't take me long to get to meet the neighbours on the campsite , i prefer face to face rather then facebook ( witch i am not on , no instagram or twitter or any of that kind) i only visit this forum frequent , as you say , like minded people althoug we do have diffrent opinions sometimes.

HTC agree with your post but also "like" it but only able to tick one box:(

I'm new but not strange
Waiting for the campervan owners on this forum (of which I am not yet one) to post up their fantastic travel plans given their obvious freedom and way of life.

London, Oxford, Forum meeting, Italian lakes, Florence, Masif Central, Paris and in between California but without The Van.:thumb

As i was just today complementing some on the fact they finaly took the plunge to post and introduce theirself , just did the test again and from the 51 members only 42 visible online others are probally have opted to not show they are online...
10 with zero posts of these 42 ...damn strange imo.
Common guys let us know who you are , what you are driving , where you travelled , ... this is not a one way street ;)

This forum is a rather nice friendly place, you can check in and check out things and it has been really useful. Still researching, SWMBO blew my MH idea out of the water so am back here looking, lurking and learning!

More worried about the 40 robots, what are they :Nailbiting
