Nearly a new Cali Ocean owner

Morning all,

Firstly what a fantastic site... tons of great info and discussions.

It has been 3 year plus in the making, endless hours looking at the right spec etc, but hopefully picking up a nearly new ocean on Saturday and already planning first trip!.

I wonder if I can ask for a bit of help. Does anyone have any recommendations for a tracker and a good insurance company?.

I think the fact that insurance premiums are fairly low for Calis, relative to the vehicle cost, would suggest that the incidence of targeted theft isn't high.

For insurance have a look at the threads linked above, and you'll see there's a clutch of insurers that tend to attract our business and they tend to be the specialist ones - Comfort, Safeguard, CCC. But a big factor in quotes seems to be if you need business use, as some seem not to want to quote for that, or for parking on driveways, or for any unattended overnight parking away from home (eg could be an issue if you want to leave it at an airport carpark).

As ever with insurance the only good advice is to shop around, and then haggle for extras eg European breakdown insurance if that's something you want. If you have any specific queries on insurance, I suggest you re-post in the Insurance sector of the forum.

Welcome Darren. Fun times ahead.
You shouldn’t need breakdown cover. A new van comes with 3 years VW assist.
So should still be available with 2016. Do check though.

This is a very good bit of research that @MattBW did a while ago about trackers.
https://vwcaliforniaclub.com/threads/gps-trackers-some-things-ive-found-researching.14990/ The club has negotiated a good discount with a basic tracker Back2You which does things like linking position to Google maps, geofencing, etc. It can be battery operated or wired in and there is no annual subscription. But you get what you pay for and subscription ones do sometimes get an insurance discount.
The van is already fitted with a Thatcham Cat 1 alarm when you are asked by prospective insurers.

Sigfox also worth a look good coverage in Europe and very long battery life that doesn’t rely on gps. Not great in the U.K. yet.
