We always take carcasonne, the board game. Takes up no space as you build the board as you go along....

The iPad version is pretty good too as it saves even more space and you can have ticket to ride, settlers and puerto rico on there too!

Ooh, thanks – hadn't realised there were iPad versions of our other favourite games. Now to wait until they drop in price again (hurray for AppShopper!)

Also got to have a bike on the back to go get the bread, papers or croissants in the morning - my preferred choice is a 93 orange clockwork now single speed with a basket on the front and big brown balloon tyres.

Fishing rod is a good idea - just a travel spinning rod with some lures/ feathers.

Roberts SolarDab Radio - charge via mains before going and then maintain via sunlight (ho ho) - it's quite compact, available in different colours, and has FM too. It has aux in and a headphone socket.
