We will be on our way back from Spain in early January (from Seville) and we were thinking of driving straight up through Spain and crossing in to France via San Sebastian. Will this be treacherous driving at this time?
Thank you

The main motorway between San Sabastian and into France is not at any great height above sea level so unless you are very unlucky with the weater you should be ok.

Agree with snowy. We have Basque friends in San Sebastian and they say they rarely have snow/ice so the roads are OK

Thank you Snowy and Briwy for responding, that is reassuring.

Just wath the news and tge weather forecast, some years it snow a lot mainly in the northern half of the country causing troubles.

In main roads usually public servants spread salt as soon as the forecast indicate the risk of snow or ice is high. You should be concerned as long as there are no extreme weather events, or you go/cross places where usually it snow like high mountains.

That's Madrid in 2009:

Madrid is right in the centre of Spain, quite high and away from the sea, so yes it snows. San Sebastian is near the sea and low. We had -2 deg in the lower northern Picos de Europa but the roads were fine in October 2012.
