Starlink - Global internet

@Webbah_in_Switzerland with regards the EHU and Starlink cable insertion hack….
Can I undo the 4 bolts and get into the EHU from outside.
Or is it the case I have to take out my shelves and get in from the inside of the plastic bit under the sliding spice rack ting ?

To make it easy to use the blue CEE connector for EHU I removed the cap part from the plug. Works fine.

I removed it from the outside. It’s easy. Then cut the notch in the middle top rear and added some window rubber trim for protection. I then duck taped the cable to a stiffer wire thingy and fished it through.

Perfect, thank you.
Looks like a little project to do this week !

I’m feeling another retropie Rpi with some sort of display in the camper for my 5k retro games.
I’ve got a spare buffalo controller and just got to level 150 in Gauntlet.
Also worked out how to save and load games now after changing the retroarch.cfg.
But how to build a display, and surround for 12v, and where to put in the California ? ;)

Yeah, the cap is just to stop anybody inadvertently pulling the cable and thus tugging the connector out. I’m thinking I won’t be plugging in that often with 3x solar…
And if I do, I’ll put the cable under the towbar.

It’s been bugging me putting the starlink cable thru the drivers 1/2” gap in window every time and placing around the passenger seat and kitchen into the wardrobe.
But now the server patch room is complete.
I can lay the cable in the same place as you’ve shown me…
Nice one.

For me at least, Solar is not enough in the winter. That’s why I made a Type 2 Mennekes to CEE 16A adaptor so I can charge at EV charging stations (AC only obviously). With a high roof I can’t park in a garage and simply plug in. I also have a 100A Victron BuckBoost to charge quickly with the alternator but it’s nice to park up at an EV charging station and chill while charging quietly at full power for fairly cheap.

That is very clever !
Nice work !

Used with the ecoflow - solar was adding more than dishy was taking so win!

Trying a HUAWEI 5G CPE 5.
Which was reccomended by @Kayleigh
Getting some good speeds with a Smarty (3) unlimited data only sim (£20 a month)

Next….Going to try the 3 sim in the M2 dev board to see if it’s the sim or the HUAWEI …

I’ve seen some good results on 4G, particularly on upload speed. Performance is better than my home broadband on 4G!

I have not tried a 5G sim yet.

You can get this router modded for external antenna. On 4G this will give you 4x4 + 2x2 MIMO. The caveat is that once modded, it can no longer use the internal antenna, so good it you want to keep it permanently connected to antenna on your roof. You would need two 4x4 MIMO pucks for best performance.

I think it’s a cracking bit of kit for £230 on Amazon (unlocked) and a much cheaper alternative to the RUTX50. Currently running it off a small Anker powerstation, but it should run on 12v with the right adapter. Power consumption is 6W.

Yep, need a 12v solution!

I was told by EE, my 2 year old 4G sim package, will actually get 5G.
And it does!
Who’s your sim with ?

It’s EE but a fixed amount of 4G data (120Gb) that lasts for a year. Once it’s used up I will get a 5g sim.

@Californication69 wow amazing work with the GL M2, I was thinking of doing the same, how are you getting on with it. Any recommendations of best SIM to use and where to buy the GL M2 from here in the UK?

I have the boondocker board and starlink working with my AXT1800 so would like to add a 5G backup as you have. Great work btw and thanks for all the posts and pictures, its been a great read.

One of these works well. Capped at 600GB per month but not throttled.
I’ve been using one for the last 6 months at home and in the van with no issues at all. I got it on offer and it works out at £10 per month.
The M2 has got more expensive so if looking for an easy backup 5G solution the Huawei 5G CPE 5 is super fast and can run off 12v.

thanks so much @Kayleigh!!, I was looking at the CPE 5, they are going for about £150 unlocked, the M2 is £160 (they have a 10% offer on the main GL.iNET store, not including any custom duties). I like the idea of using my current GL.iNET router but I believe it can be a pain to get working.

Would you recommend in this instance to look for an ebay unlocked CPE 5?

You may be looking at the Pro 2. This one is different and not used by any UK providers I believe, so should be unlocked as standard.
Here is one on eBay:
Check out what Router-mods can do if looking to convert to external antenna. I’ve not done that yet as it’s been fast enough as is!

I got mine on Amazon last year but they are not available now unfortunately.

Thanks dude.
Unfortunately the GL M2 board decided to fry itself. GLiNet were excellent though and had it back and gave me a reduced price Spitz AX3000, which I have connected to two dome antennas so get really awesome 5G coverage by using a Smarty Sim. Also have a EE data only sim in SIM card 2.
Starlink works really nicely through the AX3000.
I’ll get some pics and pop them in here.

You need to paint that Starlink pole mount black mate! I did on mine and it looks much better.

Wow that’s good of them, I’ve ordered the M2, going to give it a try, if you can share any pointers would be very much appreciated! I might use a smarty SIM too, did you use auto or did you need to put in the apn details manually? One last question why two pucks are they for different spectrum or something.

I’ve just finished printing my everlanders flat mount starlink case. Next to sand, fill, prime and then paint the same colour of the van. A bit excessive as you can’t see it on the roof but something to keep me busy I guess lol

The other issue with GLM2, it kept disconnecting from the small AX router I had, so I’m glad it died tbf.
Had to manual APN details, and was painful.
AX3000 auto and very nice !

1 puck has two antenna cables.
1 puck has 2 antenna and 2 wifi.
AX3000 has 4 output 5G antennas and two wifi.
Perfect match !

Thanks dude.

That wouldn't look amiss on the ISS

Thanks all based on your recommendations I have cancelled my M2 dev board order and will look at alternatives as you have suggested

I just took a look at the Spitz, wow amazing bit of kit, do you know if it can run off 12v? Whats the PSU rating?
