How Extreme Have You Been?

You?

We had particularly good waves in Nemina and Valdovino. Amazing spot.
Also very good here last week; had three days of amazing waves.

We free camped all over Galicia in ours. Which was fun.
How long did that take to get to from the UK? Trying to work out how far I can with the kids in a couple of weeks holiday (from North Yorkshire) I'm happy to drive all day but they won't travel for more than 3 or 4 hours in a day. I've driven around that area before kids but we flew into Madrid and hired a car and took a small tent. Would love to go back to Santiago de Compestella. The food was sublime

We started from Santander (via the ferry) so we're part way there; we then did the North Coast over a few days until we hit Galicia: spent almost three weeks there and loved it.

We did West Galicia to just about the French border in one go though through bad weather; took about eight hours including stops.

Our kids were 3 and 5 at the time; they seem to travel pretty well.

Yep Santiago de thingy was lovely; also some of the remote beaches around Finistere were amazing but definitely required a camper/motorhome and free camping bravery; took us a while to pluck up the courage but glad we did; next time we'd get a cassette loo though; however outdoorsy we thought we were, digging a hole where others have done the same was pretty grim; an alarming number don't even bother digging and the result is pretty grotty.

A little solar shower was great too.

A major attraction for us was the quietness even peak season; SW France just gets so busy! Our kids were pre school age the previous year so we went in June and had no issues with turning up to campsites or with bad traffic.

Yep; the view from the office (at home) can be rather distracting at times...

Wow what a office view. We spent many happy years camping at Tristram with friends. Our boys learnt to surf there. Saw our first Cali there.
Now go to Watergate Bay more as dog friendly all year.

That's where we first used our Cali (Tristram); we lived near Truro at the time.
Just ran to Daymer then back; looking lovely this morning but the surf is a bit small!

Daymer is fine for dogs all year around.

Daymer good for wind surfing not so good for surfing. The boys loved the rock pools at Daymer. Staying with a group of friends in Daymer soon
The Cali we saw was on the campsite. The friendly owners let us a good play inside.

A few times a year in Winter swells, Daymer gets very good waves but it's very rare.
We moved there from Surrey in 1989 largely because my Dad was a fanatical windsurfer!

It was looking very tranquil there this morning.

Unfortunately not me- I just took the photo - my surfing days were some years ago now!

Agree - food in Santiago was good but tapas/pinchos in Santander were just fantastic, one reason alone to visit Santander.

We spent a few days there; shout if you need any pointers. Pantin a few miles down the road is also stunning.

Also highly recommend the area around Malpica (head South from Valdovino); some lovely beaches, towns and a proper "local" feel to the place. The best site is slightly inland; Sisargas.

If we get a t6 in time, we'll head that way too.

Had a look at the Portsmouth Santander ferry online today. Possible road trip for next year. Cheers Kernowlad!

Our most extreme, mates Bongo in front. Wouldn't try this again.

Saw that ages ago, great vid, didn't realise it was someone on here! One of the reasons I went for the 4m :thumb

Sorry for the delay!
Never got round to writing a blog - hoping to do it soon.
We went on the Smyril Line ferry from Denmark via the Faroes for the 3 day stopover. The cost depends on the season and cabin option that you choose. The drive from the Hook of Holland to Hirtshals in Denmark was slow due to traffic and roadworks (and bad weather in Denmark!) and also in reverse!
We are going to look into transporting the van over next time - a Dutch couple had sent their old van over with Samskip from Rotterdam, though it was on top of a container, not in it!!
At Seydisfjordur we went clockwise as the weather was better in the south, calling at all the sights on the south coast, then inland through the rivers to Porsmork. On to Reykjavik and the Snaefellness peninsula, back inland to Pingvellir and into the highlands and over to Askja.
Tended to follow the good weather i.e. windy, cool/cold/snow and sunshine a bonus.
Tips - we invested in VB Air suspension - Specialist Automotive Products Ltd, Doncaster and Mick also fitted the Seikel snorkel which we needed as some of the river crossings were over a metre deep.
Also mud and snow tyres, the highland roads are very rough.
No Camping Gas in Iceland, we ran out of 2 bottles that we had taken and had to use 2 Icelandic bottles with our outside cooker.
Brandrup Iso Top Mark 3 for inside the gaiter - kept us cosy on a few stormy nights. Also, a Duvalay mattress - good nights sleep.
Very little wild camping - widely discouraged. Campsites tended to be pretty bleak, facilities minimal when working. The Camping card would be worth it if you stick to the sites that give the discount, but they are few and far between, so would depend on your route.
Finally - The Iceland Road Atlas - you will use it every day!
Can't wait to go back.

Wasdale near Wastwater in blizzards, that was a chilly stay. :D Wasn't in my cali though, video is shared somewhere on here already so I wont repeat. :)

For those interested in driving off to unusual places, the Adventure Overland show is this coming weekend.

http://www.adventureoverlandshow.net

Usually some quite interesting vehicles there and the talks are good. Loads of room, no problem getting camping tickets on the gate in previous years.

Most extreme place I took mine to was the most easterly point in the UK. It's hidden behind the gas works in Lowestoft :)

Not terribly extreme, but here are a couple of photos from an impromptu ski trip I did to Chatel (Porte Du Soleil) with my son over Christmas 2012. 2 strapping 6 footers billeted in a T4 California.

We were dwarfed by huge motorhomes, but still had a great time.

The main saving graces were:- we had hook-up, a plug in rad, heated modern shower & toilet blocks, a boot and ski kit drying room, an indoor pool, wifi and the ski bus stopped outside the campsite + we ate out 5 nights out of 7!!!
The first night my son slept up in the roof (I didn't know about the comfortz toppers back then). Strangely he decided he would be more comfortable downstairs for the rest of the week with his old man
