My waste tank was leaking from the large white screw lid under the sink so I thought I'd tighten it by hand but the thread then snapped off so I purchased a new one and fitted it fairly tight by hand and filled the waste tank, after a few seconds a drip appeared at the bottom of the lid so tightened it a little more and it sealed. I'm cautious about tightening it too tight in case the thread snaps again, is there any recommend torque setting for the lid?

Not that I am aware of.

You could remove the lid again and give the seal a wipe then smear a thin layer of vaseline on it before refitting the lid to the tank. Hand tight should be fine, provided it isn't leaking.
