Two quick questions

Where is the diag plug for the comfort CANBUS (presuming this is where the signals for the E153 control panel are)?

Do we have any of the tech docs for this bus?

I have a project in mind with the necessary CAN expert but we need to know the best place to jack in to the system and if possible the codes etc. on the messages which will save me many hours of pain.

Re: VW Comfort Info & CANBUS

The diagnostic port is in the drivers footwell.

I think the CAN is on pins 6 & 14, CAN Hi & CAN Lo respectively.

Thanks for the response Stu

That will be the OBD2 port which is for the engine etc.

I am not sure if the Cali has a single CANBUS or three like other VWs.

There are CANBUS gateways installed to keep the buses separate with only a few messages bridging. If this is the case there may be other diag ports maybe one per bus and the messages on the comfort bus would then not normally be available at the OBD2 port.

Trying to find out how the Cali is setup before I waste hours analysing text messages to find I am doing it on the wrong plug :)

Re: VW Comfort Info & CANBUS

Don,

All diagnostic and programming is carried out from the OBD port.

Is this to do with the radio switching? If so why would you be looking for signals at the Camper Control Panel?

So far as I am aware the Cali only has one CAN Gateway (19) which handles the comms for all controllers including Navigation (37) and Radio (56).

01-Engine -- Status: OK 0000
03-ABS Brakes -- Status: OK 0000
04-Steering Angle -- Status: OK 0000
08-Auto HVAC -- Status: OK 0000
09-Cent. Elect. -- Status: OK 00000
10-Park/Steer Assist -- Status: OK 0000
15-Airbags -- Status: OK 0000
17-Instruments -- Status: OK 0000
18-Aux. Heat -- Status: OK 0000
19-CAN Gateway -- Status: OK 0000
25-Immobilizer -- Status: OK 0000
56-Radio -- Status: OK 0000

I think there is reference to an Infotainment Data Bus and a Powertrain Data Bus but that is still on the same Gateway (19) which is contained within the BCM J519.

You can pick up any of the three Data Bus from the BCM behind the right drivers knee panel.

Stu

No it's for something a little more challenging :)

Thanks for info. It's great news that's a single bus will certainly make what I have in mind an order of magnitude simpler.

Spill the beans then!! :laugh2

No chance.

I need the help of two other guys to get this off the ground so I am staying schtum just in case it doesn't happen. No point getting expectations up until we have something to show.

Re: VW Comfort Info & CANBUS

If you were looking at a replacement Camper Control Panel then I'm not sure it's CAN based.

No I dont't think it is...... Yet.

Nothing a circuit board, a few components, relays etc. cannot resolve though ;)

This may be helpful -

E153 - Camper Control Unit

6-pin connector T6ap
32-pin connector T32b
2-pin connector T2p

T6ap 1 > SC23 Fuse 23 on fuse holder C
T6ap 2 > J364 Auxiliary heater control unit
T6ap 3 > J364 Auxiliary heater control unit
T6ap 4 > SB35 Fuse 35 on fuse holder B
T6ap 5 > Earth connection
T6ap 6 > SC30 Fuse 30 on fuse holder C

T32b 1
T32b 2
T32b 3 > Control unit in dash panel insert (Speed Sensing)
T32b 7 > G18 Temperature sensor
T32b 8 > G18 Temperature sensor
T32b 9 > J698 Refrigerator box
T32b 10 > J472 Refrigerator compressor relay

T32b 22 > A11 Onboard supply charger unit
T32b 23
T32b 24
T32b 25 > N162 Battery charge control measuring resistor

T2p 1 > J364 Auxiliary heater control unit
T2p 2 > J364 Auxiliary heater control unit

Looks like everything is Analogue.

Thanks Stu. That was the feeling we got from looking at the previous docs as well. So it just got a level more complex again lol

Re: VW Comfort Info & CANBUS

If you were planning to add something to the Data Bus it would need to be addressed so that it could be registered in the Gateway. I suppose you could consider using the address of a device that was never going to be fitted to a Cali but you also need to be sure that the Cali BCM is able to handle it. Might give the VW garage a bit of a shock when they plug ODIS in too :laugh2

Hi,

Im currently converting a Caravelle into a california, i have everything from a salvage 2006 T5 cali.

I cant get the roof to work with the central control panel, i think its something to do with the window not being down? Is this just a text comand or does the central control recive a signal from the window to let it know its position?

Any ideas how to get it working?

Also how do you change the language as its in German which dosent help !

Thanks Simon

Re: VW Comfort Info & CANBUS

On the cali the window doesn't have to be in the down position for the roof to work.

Re: VW Comfort Info & CANBUS

Have you checked the signal from the Dash Insert for speed sensing?

So the camper control needs to know the vehicle is stationary........

Havent checked any signals as dont know where to look? Where would the speed sensing signal be? would it be 0-5v?

The california side of the loom is seperate to the vehicle loom, the previous conversion i did i just bypassed the control and wired in a relay, 3 way dpdt switch. I want and try and get this one looking factory as possible!

Thanks

Simon

Re: VW Comfort Info & CANBUS

So ive changed the language to English.

When i try and open the roof 'ignition on' is displayed.

ive checked for power on terminals 27, 30, 32 anyone know if any of them are ign live?

ive tried powering them up but still 'ign on' is displayed?

An y ideas on what other pin may give the control unit that ign is on?

Re: VW Comfort Info & CANBUS

Does look like you are missing a switched supply somewhere. Have those three pins you mentioned got 12v on them when the ignition is on?

Try 28 & 29 too.
