I’m a bit alarmed with my tyre wear.
My T6 Cali has just had her first birthday 8k on the clock and the front tyres are JUST on the legal limit.
Current tyres are Bridgestone Turanza Er300
235/55R17 103V on Cascavals.
Comments & recommendation welcome.

Got the same tyres and wheels on a 204 4 Motion DSG with the same mileage and virtually brand new.

I see yours is the same vehicle 2 or 4 wheel drive?

I ask because my previous motor a DSG Touran has a tendency to spin the front wheels. One of the reasons I went for a 4 Motion that splits the power 70/30.

Hi Mike
Not 4 motion and do find any attempt to move away quickly causes front wheels to spin, really annoying and uncomfortable. Really shocked that others are getting 3 times the mileage.

Interesting and annoying. I run my fronts on 44 and rear on 43. I’ll check the depths later. They were 8mm when new.

OK! You got me out on a crisp winters morning to check my tyres properly.

I’ve done 8000 miles but I did have a blowout on a rear not so long ago. I needed a new rear and put the new spare on the rear as well to even things up. They are at about 7mm and the fronts which have been on since new are just over 5mm.

So not such a wide difference as I at first imagined.

If your fronts are wearing out that quickly I would get the alignment checked. That will be much more significant than the wheels slipping a little on pulling out of junctions etc. (Unless you’re doing smokey burnouts) :thefinger

I’ve had a lot of vw4motion cars (from what I understand they are haldex based - sending power to the rears only if it detects the fronts slipping). I have never noticed reduced tyre wear on the fronts compared to the equivalent 2 wheel drive versions.

Ditto for other Haldex-drive AWDs - Volvo and Skoda in my case. Alignment deffo must be prime suspect.

Thanks for the feedback- is there a particular tyre that suits the Cali ?

I have the standard Beach tyres that came with the vehicle. They have done 37,000 km so far and have just had their third (and probably final) rotation.

Follow my blog: www.au-revoir.eu
I assume with you team on board that you tend not to overtake on roundabouts etc.

I have two drive wheels, but there are not too many differences between front and rear, I assume you are fast enough when you leave !! maybe you're like Stoner with the Ducati, it did not have the knob to accelerate, just an on / off switch ..... hahaha however, the Bridgestone tires are "hold", even more than the Continental ....

The cheapest at the rate yours have been consumed ! (Only light hearted - no need for the tyre police to start).
If your wear is alignment related, the wear will surely be uneven across each tyre. If the wear is even but just rapid, and slow across the rear pair, then it must be torque related?

I found exactly the same issue with the VW supplied tyres, try and move away with a bit of speed, or even some hill starts, and it’d get into a spin. In my case they were Conti Van Contact 200 on Devonports, which are 215 rather than 235. Have switched to Goodyear Vector 4Seasons now and very pleased with the difference :thumb

It comes down to what use you are going to put them to.

I live in the soft South so for me it would be a toss up between the all season ones for everyday use.

I would qualify that this is from all I’ve read, not experience as I’ve not had a Cali long enough.

All Season
Michelin CrossClimate +
Or
Goodyear Cargo Vector 2

The Michelin’s been the new kid on the block. So interesting.

For more rugged terrain.

Michelin Latitude Cross

For serious winters there are many threads and many opinions. Generally they are all considered a massive difference over standard tyres if you want to go and play in the serious snow.

I’m still on the fence between specialist tyres for winter/summer or the all season route. I’ll be enormously relieved when I’ve made a decision.

Cali's run on all sorts of tyres. 8,000 miles to wear out the fronts indicate something is wrong, possibly alignment but if wear is even it may be something else.

Even with wheel spin on take-off a Cali is not going to generate that much it is going to scrub tyres to the legal limit in 8,000 miles. I do suggest you have a competent tyre service company do a laster check on your alignment.

As for tyre choice, it depends entirely on what your type of camping is,: If a lot of winter time camping in reasonably moderate latitudes then an all season, otherwise those called "summer" tyres that maximise economy of travel by having a less rolling resistance but are totally useless once it gets slippy. If you are going into areas at times where heavy snow and compacted snow can be expected then go for winter tyres, and if compacted snow, ice and gradients are all the norm then don't forget the chains. However whatever the tyre a wear-out rate of 8k miles is indicative of a problem somewhere.

Hmmm... just checked my tyre pressures (as set by dealer) 51 psi in the front. Could this be the issue?

Could be.
What is the tyre wear like on the front tyres?
Equal across the tyre width?
More in the centre of the tread?

If the latter then normally indicative of too high a tyre pressure.

What does the tyre pressure label say on the Drivers B pillar?

Tyre pressure on B pillar says 44psi .

Wear is pretty even across the width.

Seems high.

My reading was when cold and set with a good quality gauge.

I’d have a word with a good tyre dealer and get your set up checked when your new boots go on.

Mike

Just remembered. Its important to reset your tyre pressure in the MFD after you’ve adjusted your pressures or it will activate.

I run mine at 44 front and rear. Higher pressure may not help wheel spin. I would definitely get the alignment checked before changing the tyres and lower the pressures.
51 psi in these temperatures would have been higher in summer.

Any updates on this T6POE?
My issues are similar except I'm at 14000mls. Ready for changing soon so still not great.Same tyres.
Even wear, worse on the front. After a service about 5 weeks ago I too had higher PSI (52 to be exact) but until then (and again today) they have around 45PSI checked very couple of months and corrected by 1 - 3 PSI.

Hi
I put Michelin CrossClimates on and have done 7k since and barely any wear.
So can only assume the Turanza are junk.
