For our first holiday in our Cali we are planning two weeks in Ireland in June/July, from Holyhead and back to Pembroke (can't book it yet until Irish Ferries release bookings to agents (Avios)). This will be our first time in Ireland so we need to plan our itinerary etc. Will need a site near Dublin when we arrive in the evening, and near Rosslare for a morning sailing. So...has anyone got any good tips for places and sites?

Also, and slightly related...does anyone have any good guide recommendations for both Ireland and UK? We do like basic facilities/showers but on the whole tend to shy away from the big motorhome/caravan sites (we come to this as campers rather than caravaners!)

I can recommend this site http://www.killarneycamping.com/ Killarney is well located for the Ring of Kerry, Dingle etc and has plenty to do nearby. It was very quiet when we visited recently, other than the occasional train that zaps past close by - which (to me) wasn't a problem at all. It is a big site but seems to have plenty of capacity with facilities etc.

http://www.eaglepointcamping.com/ is superb. They even loaned us a dog for the week we were there!

For a site close to Rosslare, try this one: 15 minutes away, clean and very friendly. http://www.camping-ireland.ie/parks/wexford/81-st-margarets-beach-caravan-a-camping-park.html

Having visited the south for the first time, I wholeheartedly recommend it - stunning place and really friendly folks (I haven't been on many campsites where you end up on fist name terms with all the campers before!)

Just make sure to read up on the little 'incident' that occurred between the British and the Irish and is very obviously still raw - with a lot of well meant and friendly banter, with a slight edge, coming from most at some point!

DK Eyewitness Travel Guide 'Back Roads' Ireland. We thoroughly enjoyed two weeks meandering around the SW from Roselare and spending the last two days in the Wicklow Mountains. We found the book of great help, but we will need to return, perhaps on the Triumph next time. Great roads ideal for a Cali, great scenery, great people and the campsites we used together with Brit stops were good. We travelled during June 17 and was surprised how quiet the roads were in general. Go for it, it's still on our bucket list!! We got the book from our library, but I see that a new version is available April 18. Enjoy
