Service at VW dealer - or a trusted VW repair shop

My local VW / Audi dealer is terrible. Service has been poor and Very expensive. There is a local ‘honest’ VW garage that I trust. My Cali (bought in Germany, not from the local dealer) needs its first service. Any thoughts on what I would not go to the person I trust?

Do you intend to keep the vehicle long-term?
A full VW service history can help re-sale.
In the UK a non VW service, provided genuine parts are used, does not invalidate the Warranty but can make it more difficult to get a Warranty Claim sorted, more hoops to jump through.
If out of Warranty and keeping long-term I would go with the one you trust.
