Can I fit a large ridged solar panel on the roof of a cali ocean either the motorised roof. Or will it be to much strain on the motor. ? Also I take it this one will have smart alternator on it. But I’m reading that vw still fit an old split charger. If so is it easy to retro fit

Checkout Solarcampersolutions, a Forum member, for their VW California kits. Panels in a frame that bolts to the roof rails. Work perfectly with the standard VW split charge relay. You can fit upto 3 x 100+ watt panels charging the leisure batteries + engine battery if needed.
