Neighbour opposite mowing the grass... Stone flew up and smashed the window...allegedly..... What are the chances?

Massively underwhelmed with Comfort insurance/Aviva/Autoglass. Zero help this afternoon, have to call back tomorrow in the vain hope of getting it resolved and we're supposed to be doing a stop over tomorrow night.

Glad I've got a bottle of vodka to drown my sorrows tonight!!

Not unusual, unfortunately. Your neighbour should pay but it’s easy to say that, awkward to bring it up without I’ll feeling.

Happened to us at a caravan park (not to the Cali), site staff were mowing the grass with flymos and smashed our window. Good job it was an inanimate object, not a person! Rotary mowers should be used with care and any loose objects cleared away.

A pain but probably better than a panel.

Speak to your dealer as he will probably be able to suggest a VW authorised repairer. Glass repair should not effect your no claims with comfort.

Hi Ladysmiff sorry to hear that . I’m very anti Auto glass and all the big companies . I’ve had to have windscreens redone in the past as they were incorrectly fitted and didn’t use manufacturers original glass .

As you probably read on this forum we had the galley window ( toughened ) and passenger side window ( laminated ) broken in Chambery last year . It was attempted break in . We had it temporarily repaired with Mylar clear film and carried on to Merribel camping in the snow . It was a bit noisy but ok . I have used a specialist auto glass fitter in Poole before http://www.firstglass.co.uk/ and was very impressed so arranged for him to do it on our return . He ordered the original spec / colour glass from Vw and took 2 days to do the job as the side window was sikaflexed and needed 24 hrs to cure . He also took out the grey water tank as the shattered toughened glass from the galley window was behind it . The passenger window is laminated in a Cali allegedly for sound insulation which it does but it is also a lot more secure . Normal Vw vans just have toughened . The big auto glass companies would have used non Vw glass and it would have been toughened only . I spoke to my insurers ( Comfort) who were very good and said that I didn’t want Autoglass to do it and just had to pay the difference . Oh and by the way the French Autoglass equivalent was going to do the job in 2 hours !

Anyway good luck but make sure it’s laminated Vw glass they use .

That sucks @LadySmiff
Sorry to hear it I hope you get aa satisfactory outcome.

Thanks Trevor, that's really helpful. We'll send an update to the saga later!

Not standard I'm afraid. laminated glass in the cab is an extra so please make sure you have the correct replacement glass.

Thanks again Trebor (flippin auto correct!) And LL. Dug out our order/spec this morning to make sure we get the correct glass. Autoglass coming today some time to fit the temp perspex, I hope he knows his stuff or my OH is going to burst a blood vessel!

When I retired, I started cutting peoples' grass in order to keep myself active and to work outside in the fresh air. Over the next few years I managed to pop quite a few windows but almost all on property not vehicles and most with the dreaded petrol strimmer and not a mower. I always carried insurance and always arranged for it to be fixed asap without quibble. That was until one day when I came up against Mrs B Angry who claimed that I had put in her first floor window. This was highly unlikely with a hooded rotary mower so I politely declined her request for recompense. When she threatened me with all sorts of hidious things I dug my heels in even further and told her to go forth and multiply. Had she been polite and reasonable in the first place I would have given her the benifit of the doubt and got it repaired straight away. I still think that she had earned herself such an unpleasant reputation in the area that one of her neighbours had taken a pot shot at her with an air rifle.

Glass being broken by flying objects from mowers etc is very common and in many cases almost unavoidable. The usual cause is either pea beach or stones etc hidden in the grass. I always move our vehicles elsewhere and advise our neighbours to do the same when I cut our grass. These things can always be repaired but be sure to keep children inside when this activity is being done.

You could make you first course of action a friendly chat with your neighbour to see if their property insurance has third party cover, most do. If it does, then insist that the glass is replaced like for like by a reputable glass company. If you end up claiming on your vehicle insurance it doesn't usually affect any NCD but there can often be an excess to pay. Pass that cost onto your neighbour.

Thanks Borris, he's actually been pretty reasonable so far and said he would cover any cost "if" that's the cause.... There isn't anything else it could have been. Really good tip to move the bus next time he does it though.

Hi LadySmiff your Vin number will reveal exactly what glass you have . If your window didn’t break into a thousand pieces and fall apart then it’s laminated .
