Hi everyone

Happy new year to you all.
Out driving today in the Cali and the message "engine workshop!" Flashed up on the dashboard.

Any ideas?

It sounds bad!!??

Jane :help

If it is still running as normal then it shouldn't be any thing too serious I would let the dealer plug it in to find the problem.good luck

Will do, will post the outcome in case anyone else gets the same.....

Just got back from France in T5. Glow Coil flashing on dash. Engine Fault workshop flashed up. Later, oil light on...was very low on dipstick. Put in 1litre. Ok for a while. Then Glow Coil flashing on dash again. Checked oil after further 500 miles. A bit low. Added half a litre. later catalytic converter symbol lit up yellow but not flashing. After van had cooled and oil settled checked dipstick. Had a little too much in. How much extra oil will damage catalytic converter please? Could this all be down to a sensor fault?

Had the error message checked by VW they said I had a faulty wire which they replaced.
It's been fine since but I didn't hesitate taking it in as they said it could go into limp mode at any point ..... :headbang

Get it plugged in, we've seen these vans have simple fixes like loose plugs to broken wires up to completely blocked DPF's. You need to get it looked at and often a second opinion too as mistakes can be made.

Sorted!

Thx for the advice. It turned out to be just a faulty exhaust temp sensor that caused the glow plug to come on. The catalytic converter light was a red herring.

I had the Glow Plug warning light flashing last weekend during camping trip. Next morning the engine warning lamp came on for Cat Converter fault(according to hand book). No loss of power and everything functioning normally. Rang VW in Cleckheaton who suggested ok to drive home.
Since out of warranty (2010 180DSG with 20k only distance miles) dropped in to see my favourite helpful backstreet garage as he had booked a specialist with VW diagnostics kit. Unfortunately he was double booked but my garage ran his universal diagnostic tool to see if any info and came up with engine faults as per pic below. "P242A00 Exhaust Temp Sensor Circuit Bank 1" and "Manifold Absolut Pressure/Barometic Pressure"

Anyone any idea what any of this means please? I plan to go and get the proper VW diagnostic check next week but would like to top off the garage in advance if possible as 20 mile round trip each time which I am not happy about with a warning flashing. Thanks

I have this exact issue with my golf. Mr backstreet changed the exhaust temp sensor and it still does it! The amber engine light comes on for a couple of days and then goes off again! Need to go back but have done about 3000 miles since and no noticeable effect. Golf has done 87k and is an early mk5 1.6 TDi so it sounds like its a cross VW issue!

Sounds very similar issue. I have now had a proper check with VW diagnosis software and appears to be one of four temperature sensors relating to the DPF filter (I think all four are for the DPF). It is the one towards the back. Have ordered the replacement sensor which will be fitted next week. The VW diagnosis expert said it was a very common problem on VW, Audi, Skoda, Seat. We will have to see if the warning lights continue to come on. Thanks for the feedback though.

I had a very reliable VW EOS - it had no serious problems for all the 80k miles that it did, however it did occasionally get these error codes.

Engine management light would come on, but would drive fine.

In the early days I would take to VW and they would plug it in - the computer would point to a sensor problem - they would replace the sensor - and reset the computer and off I would go.

In the future when it did it I would leave it longer and longer between reporting it and sometimes it would fix itself and sometimes I would book it in.

After a few cycles of this one of the VW tech's actually did some manual troubleshooting rather than just looking at the computer screen and they found some corrosion in one of the connectors to the sensors. This was cleaned up and it was all good until I sold it.

That sounds like a top tip thanks. I will get my mechanic to look into that at the same time. For the record my Cali is April 2010 with 20k milage which has been all long distance camping trips. Very little stop start driving which I understand is not good for the DPF. Will see how we go but good feedback thanks.
