Christmas in the Cali?

We are looking to go away for Christmas this year, we will be leaving on the 17th December and returning on the 3rd January.

Looking for idea's in Europe, we realise a lot of France closes down so we are happy to mix and match with hotels and wild camping/campsites.

Any idea's where to head for?

Will you be thinking of a bit further south? It's a lovely drive down to Spain and the costas, lots of Brits wintering there so might find places open.
Come back over the Pyrenees if you have winter tyres or chains, that would be an adventure.

Turkey is good at Christmas

While we call turkeys turkeys because of the mistaken belief that they came from Turkey, Turks called turkeys "hindis" because of the mistaken belief that they came from India, they are now known as "India bird", a theme in much of Europe: French - dinde, Dutch - kulkoen. Much of SE Asia call the fowl "Dutch chicken" or "French chicken". Mandarin is a more sensible "fire chicken" due to the turkey's ability to flare up, but in Korean and Japanese it is "seven-faced chicken" for a similar reason, its ability to change its appearance. Americans persist in prizing the turkey for being a homely critter of the heartland, blissfully unaware of the fact that it's named after a foreign country, and imported to the US from Britain a century after it had been landed on our shores from Spain. The closest is modern Hindi, where it is named "peru", just half a continent from its native Mexico - where it is now extinct in the wild!

We sent Christmas in The Alps skiing last year and had a blast, really surprised how many campsites were open (may full!).

We are planning a similar trip next year, thinking Southern Spain as the furthest to aim for, but interested to hear about routes too

Yep, early Jan last year outside our house in the Pyrenees, definitely an adventure. Make sure your're geared up for this.. Seriously though, Christmas in the mountains is great.
