We are off to France and Germany soon and have no idea how busy it is in in the Alsace region of France and the Black Forest in Germany. Has anyone been there recently. We would like recommendations on where to go and also some idea of how busy the campsites could be i.e. do we need to book in advance?

Here's a starter for the Alsace.
Straßbourg might be worth booking for 2 or 3 days as it does
get busy, the rest you can just wing it, theres plenty of campsites.
Although the school holidays begin next week.

Thanks. Very useful. Are there any more must go to places?

Freiburg im Breisgau (southern part of Black Forest) is a very nice city to visit. The Camping am Möslepark is a good place to stay.

Count the Cali's in the picture :) :

And we loved this place in Kinzigtal:

Many thanks. We are really looking forward to our trip.

The area around Schluchsee and Titisee is very nice. Plenty of campsites and not too busy. Some nice towns and villages to visit in that area and there's Feldberg, the highest point in the Black Forest (I think) that has nice walking.
I go quite regularly but often only as a day trip. Try to avoid the big campsite resorts unless you like that sort of thing as they often have a lot of kids and are more expensive. There are also brewery's and gin distillers :)
