680 new wheels and All Terrain tyres

Look great.
I’ve just bought a set of OZ from them, super fast delivery (next day) which was a surprise as I had free delivery 4-7days and reduced price (Black Friday deal).
Very pleased
Out of interest what tyres are you fitting?

I haven’t decided yet, but Michelin latitude cross 235/55/17, Michelin crossclimate2, or I’ll stick with BFG which I run on my old joker.

As mentioned above below are the additional and closeup pictures of our new wheels:

Hi, I like the wheel / tyre combo - also, please could you let me know what make of screen cover you have, it looks a good fit - the standard interior VW one is fiddly to say the least! Thanks, Alun

Hi, smart wheel extensions - where can they be bought? Waiting for our GC 600 in Q1/22
thanks, Alun
Hi Alun,

exciting times ahead, the wheel arch extensions can be bought directly from your VW dealer however they won’t come up for the grand California so you’ll have to ask him to search the system.

I have them fitted to the front and rear.
they are especially built for the rear arches but they also fit the front arches with a little bit of fiddling around. As far as I remember they cost about £130 each set.
When they order them for you request that they are especially packed from VWUK as I had to send back at least 10 sets back as they came damaged as the body edges are fragile.

Will

Hi

thanks for that, the only General grabber AT3 in this size that I can find have a load rating of 112, which as you say equates to 1120kg per tyre. I assume you have those tyres.
My GC680 is gross legal plated weight of 3880kg with a front axel weight of 2100kg and rear axel weight of 2380kg. Therefore this requires a minimum tyre load rating of 115 which equates to 1215 kg (114 tyre rating =1180 kg, rear axel limit is 2.380 divided by 2 = 1190kg per tyre, you don’t take the overall weight and divide by 4 to get minimum load ratings, you must take your highest individual axel weight limit and divide by 2) For this reason I am struggling to find AT tyres of any brand that works

Please beware that if your 680 is the same as mine then you are probably running tyres on the rear axel that are not rated high enough, this may void you insurance if something happens and may be dangerous especially as I note you have, like me, a tow bar and tow when weight could be rear biased. Note the tyre loading supplied from the factory is 117 = 1285kg which builds in a safety margin which is needed imo as the GC is a heavy van to start with. This may not be the case with a van plated at 3500kg but I note all GC‘s come from the factory with 117 rated tyres all round.

I continue my search for a tyre that works.
might push clearances and speedo error but have you considered 265/60/18?

Hi Alun - the screen cover is made by Taylor Made. It's their VW crafter version It's easy to fit and very nice quality

Hi Fiona - it transpired that these 18" tyres didn't have the correct load rating for a 680.
You need 115 rated tyres which meant I had to change my wheels to 16" as the 16" General Grabber has a higher 115 load rating.
Best you speak to Rogue Alloy before ordering

The Club Shop also do an external screen cover for the Grand California and have a selection of colours.

Thank you, very much. We’re all sorted now

After much changing of mind I've finally sorted the new wheels and tyres for our van. I had 2 main reasons for wanting to change:

1. (In my opinion) the proportions of the standard van look all wrong as the wheels look so tiny in comparison to the huge van body. A bit like a body builder with really skinny legs.. I kept trying to convince myself that I would eventually get used to the look, and honesty I tried, but in the end I'm afraid I failed and the bodybuilder has been forced onto the squat machine.

2. Winter grip. Damn these vans are big and heavy and I kept seeing us ploughing through a hedge on a frosty morning and as we intend to use the van throughout the winter winter tyres were definitely on the shopping list.

I tried using Google to figure out what the best solution was but I got lots of conflicting information and opinions so hence the multiple changes of mind
So in the end I spoke to the good people at Rogue Alloy Wheels and they set my mind at rest and supplied and fitted what I hope is the perfect solution. The wheels are their own brand 18 inchers and the tyres are General Grabber At3's.

So far so good - the ride is slightly firmer (in a good way) and the van has lost a lot of that "soggy" feeling through corners and the steering feels slightly more direct. I didn't notice any increase in road noise and now the speedo reads the same as the GPS. No frost or snow yet so I can't comment on the grip.

Overall very happy with the "upgrade" and they didn't break the bank either.

Sorry I only took one quick snap of them - see below but if anyone wants any closeups I can post them next week. Please let me know.

BTW if there are any traffic wardens amongst you I apologise profusely as I'm parked on the double yellows opposite our house in the picture

Sooooo.... you had to change the rims you bought from Rogue? Did they accept them back outta curiosity? Which replacements did you go for? We're near Newbury so going to Rogue would be a no brainer for us.

Yes I had to change the 18 inch wheels to 16 inch.
When I explained the load rating issue to Chris at Rogue he very quickly put his hands up and said it was their mistake and got a new set prepped for me with absolutely no issues.
If you're in Newbury then it's an easy decision for you
I went for their own brand 16 inch wheels with General Grabber At3's..

I bought some OZ from rogue, great service and super quick delivery plus they had a Black Friday special discount. Definitely recommend them.

Hello …I’m taking delivery of a 680 in January and I wondered if any of you owners out there had ever fitted a spare wheel with carrier, jack etc
Thanks

Thanks for quick reply …never thought of that option, I was only thinking of something under in the the floor.

Had mine fitted from new easy install for the tech costs around £600 all in ie Jack, tools, carrier, wheels and tyre. Fitted. It works on a wind out sling from inside the van so quite secure.

Hadde min montert fra ny enkel installasjon for teknologien koster rundt £ 600 alt i dvs Jack, verktøy, bærer, hjul og dekk. Tilpasset. Det fungerer på en vind ut slynge fra innsiden av varebilen så ganske sikker.
