Looking to buy
Hi i have the opportunity to buy a vw westfalia California 1992 hi top, 2.4 diesel non turbo 12months MOT used often for trips to Scotland and abroad. Reliable good condition inside and out sale price £9000, question is this a good price and is it a good buy for first camper or should I buy something newer? I will have £3000 to spend on the van if needed. Any advise would really help as I am undecided on what to do.

sounds a good price to me. its a great camper to start with and wont lose any money if you want to upgrade at a later date.

A 1992 California DIESEL might be OK for the UK. If you want to travel to the continent in many town and cities diesel cars older than 10 year a not allowed / not permitted.

Ditto what Ewound D said, you may have some troubles in certain areas within France, Germany and Austria (probably more countries) as certain major cities are under emission control. But don't let this put you off.

It's all down to your budget. You'll certainly not lose much money in terms of depreciation on an old Westy.
If it's not got a FSH or at least a recent service, may be best to request this being done prior to the purchase by VW or a specialist. They're good for a good 300K miles, reliable.

Are you aware it won't comply with the London Emission Zone requirements. I realise you are miles away but its £100 per day to go inside the M25 which may affect your usage or if nothing else limit resale options.

At the moment its only London in the UK but I can see it won't be too long before other major cities jump on the bandwagon.

As others have said. Emission zone requirements will kill off older diesels sooner then later. Green being governments newest cash cow. Prices are sure to drop on older diesels know matter if its a camper or not. You maybe better of looking at a T25 type that comes in petrol. Many years ago I used to put in fuel injection engines in the vans and they are not a bad drive.F
