I decided to test the residual current circuit breaker. Pressed the test button, nothing happened. So I moved the selector bridge down to "off" manually, then tried to switch it to "on" position up, ready to test it again. Now it just won't return to the "on" position. Am I being stupid, or have I got a faulty switch?

I had this recently . . . it took a few goes then it stayed there. No idea what the cause was.

Thanks for your encouragement RockinNRollin. Tried it numerous times, eventually it stayed in the on position, result. Risked trying the test button again, it didn't function, so it seems that the switch should be replaced.

Were you plugged into EHU?

Thanks WelshGas. No I wasn't connected. Yes it's a pity it doesn't state in the handbook that you need to be plugged in to run a check.
