Hi New to the club, in the process of buying our first California which is a 2012 180bhp tdi which we are really excited about, but then after reading about the problems with this engine we have become a bit more weary about purchasing a 180, and have now started our search again for a 140. Is there anyway of determining pre purchase that a particular 180 has or will develop the fault with engine and how common is it. Thanks in advance

No there is not.

I speak as an owner of a 2010 model, new engine a few years ago at 45k miles approx.

And earlier this year a bill of £5700 to fix the broken DSG box.

Beware.

Reality is that any 11 year old vehicle will have a risk of mechanical failures.

Did you check the service history of the 180? There is a possibility that it has had an engine replacement previously.

You can get an oil sample analysis done to assess if there’s existing damage then if ok take the precaution of replacing (if not already done) with a new EGR.
My 2013 180, never had a problem.

2010/2011 180 biturbo engines had a problem , recognised by VW , due to a manufacturing problem that was fixed. Post 2011 " some" 180s have had a problem with excessive oil consumption due to corrosion and breakdown in the egr oil cooler. Why some egr oil coolers breakdown no one knows. Is it the oil cooler or something causing the oil cooler to break down. My 2014 180 has just passed 124,000 miles with 0mls oil use between annual oil changes.
If it is a private owner and less than 60,000 miles ask for a £8000 discount or walk away. If it is a VW Dealership and less than 60,000 miles ask the questions and request a £8000 discount or a 1 Yr warranty.
