Hello. I have a 2001 LHD LWB VW T4 California Exclusive. 2.5 Diesel Automatic Box, apparently a Golf GB.

The box 'blew up' and I cannot get it replaced or repaired locally. Could it be tweaked/modified with another box by someone or is this the end for us???

Hello and welcome.
By box you're referring to the transmission? I would be surprised if you couldn't find a replacement transmission from an accident car or the like. I wouldn't expect a VW dealer to help you with this but there are specialist that rebuild trannies. A quick google turned up these guys:

It's a standard VW box, replacement parts still available so strange reaction from your garage.
Anyway, you could opt to replace with the strong 150pk auto box, which is much better in coping with the extra weight of the Exclusive. Even for the normal cali/T4, these automatic gearboxes were never that reliable...
Or you could consider installing a manual box. Should be about the same cost...
