Hi, I was looking at the VW Configurator this evening ( for an Ocean ) and noticed what appears to be a new item listed - ‘Z2C’ for an extra £720. It appears to be something to do with the glass. Can anyone tell me what this is? Was this standard before or something new? Thanks (screen shots attached..)

Yep, just checked on there myself, that’s a new option, quite a pricey one too. It still surprises me that VW haven’t updated the engine specs from the 199 to the 204 yet.

Yes I know, it’s crazy considering they are underway (or soon to be?) with the builds of the 204! Plus they haven’t released the emissions / mpg data either, but that’s a whole other conversation!

But re the z2c - I’m keen to know what it is and if it’s worth having (not that I’ll rush into spending more money ) - maybe someone can shed some light on it!?

Z2C is laminated glass, plenty of posts on the forum about it e.g:

So does that mean that it was standard on the 6.1 ocean but now it’s not and you have to pay for it as an option?

I'm not sure but I think it was always an option and it changes the glass type to something that makes less noise.

I didn’t add it specifically, but it appeared in my options list. It must be the glass that is part of the Sports Pack - ie darker factory tint in the living area. I hadn’t realised it reduces noise.
Sports pack is expensive so it’s good (and confusing) to read the discussion via broodie’s link, and to see the cost of the glass option alone, which I don’t recall seeing as a box to tick in the confuserator when I ordered in October. Certainly the description of the Sports Pack didn’t give much detail.7A00FB3D-FC01-4786-82D4-4CEC92D88B32.png
Be good to know what S5X is too!

Thanks for the link.. It’s an odd one as it’s not something I came across or was told about by the dealer when I ordered my Ocean in November.

Looks like they made a standard option now a additional option

It has never been standard.
It was an option on T6 vans, also an option on T6.1 but only available as part of the style or sport pack, not available seperatly.

Starts to make sense of the Sports Pack price. I had assumed it was the same glass, darker tint (so no cost in effect)...
Would like to know more about the acoustic and lamination elements.
I’ve asked VW chat who know nothing (of course) but have asked their product team to email me...

The front windows have laminated rather than toughened glass, so harder to break, they will crack like the windscreen rather than shatter.
Also means as the glass is thicker people have reported problems fitting front wind deflectors as it makes the channels for the front glass a tight fit.

There were some threads on it years ago when it first became an option try searching for acoustic.

Thanks just did. Sounds like the acoustic benefits might just be a benefit to the lamination of the cab windows then, rather than an upgrade to any other glass on the van?

A 2016 thread suggested that the laminated front windows are lighter tint than the standard & are the same as the windscreen - ie very light tint. but the rear windows go from being approx 40% to 25% transmission. The laminated glass for the front doors & the change of tint levels were the only changes.

I will get back in my box then

Ive spent the last 7 years reading all the brochures & trying to decide whether it was worth upgrading the current van. it took till jan this year for me to make the jump.

Am thinking about going on mastermind with it as my specialist subject.

Appreciate your knowledge, and willingness to share it, especially when I get this sort of response from VW

I ordered acoustic glass as a stand alone option on my Coast 6.1 4 motion as it offered privacy glass, opening nearside window above hob plus the quieter glass all for 693 Euros...more choice abroad...

Opening near side window is standard (on oceans anyway) in U.K.
But that Z2C pack still isn’t clear to me (and costs more than you paid!)
What do those 4 bullets in post #1 above mean?! And which ones are standard anyway?!
Uncomfortabke how the packages often ‘include’ items that are standard anyway

Just had this through from VW:
"The laminated glass in front, privacy glass in rear and laminated windshield are part of the Z2C option that you have selected and I can confirm that these features do not come with the California Ocean as standard."
I hadn't realised that the windscreen is not laminated as standard on a 6.1 Ocean. Is it just tempered then? Amazing on such an expensive vehicle. The safety, noise (and solar gain?) benefits of laminated seem worthwhile then. Z2C wasn't available on its own when I ordered in October, but I'm glad to have fluked it by adding the Sports Pack.
This does make the Sports Pack that includes Z2C seem like reasonable value at £2640. The SP also includes tinted rear lights, black b-pillars, black mirror cases, black under tray, and 'edition' alloys (black 18" Springfields). The wheels alone are listed in the configurator at £3300! Although you can't add them alone - you must add the SP if you select them. All very confusing...1614011189195.png

Makes the style pack even better value than the sports pack. You get the under trays etc as well as the Z2C for about £900.

But the style pack looks a bit naff don’t you think?

True, but its odd how they try and 'sell' the devonports as part of the Style Pack, which are of course an old design - classic but not particularly stylish - and a free option on any new California!
Amazing that Z2C isn't mentioned in the description of the Style or Sports Pack:

Style Package

Price incl. VAT £ 960

  • LED rear combination lamp with special styling

  • Partially painted bumpers

  • Tool kit with pantograph jack

Thanks for the update! Good to know you have it included within the Sports Pack but I don’t think I’ll add it as a separate item now. It’s strange it wasn’t listed at the time of my purchase (Nov), I guess they are looking to make a few extra ££ where they can by offering it separately. Yikes, those wheels alone are a bit eye watering in price! Looks like you’ve got a decent amount of stuff in your Sports pack for what you pay. Exciting times!

And dare I say it.. the announcement by Boris for the UK suggests we’ll be ‘fully open’ by the summer if all goes to plan, fingers crossed for some proper adventures in the new vans!

But the style pack looks a bit naff don’t you think?
I thought the polished underplates looked good, the wheels I would replace anyway.
