Guess I should say 'yes' as Stephen's photo is of our Cali.

Our pre-owned Cali came complete with Mutze when we bought it two years ago. Since then we have used it extensively, including for a month last May in a very wet west coast Scotland trip. We sleep 'upstairs' whenever possible, and it has always proved completely waterproof. The only ingress we have had was on a very wet and windy night when some rain was blown under the foot of the Mutze at the back, which was the windward face. I think this would have been fine, but we had our feet and the bedding against the Cali canvas so got water in by being in contact with this. It stills seems to be in very good condition with much of the new crisp feel about it. So, robust, hard wearing and waterproof.

One of the issues people raise with any add-on cap is the breathability. I honestly don't know if it is made of breathable material but we haven't found that the interior gets clammy. We tend to use it in dewy conditions as well as in the rain, so I can't really do a fair back to back comparison with sleeping without it in moist conditions.

Getting it on and off is pretty straightforward. Raise the roof a bit, slide it on from the back, sit it over the front corners, pull it down over the back corners, raise the roof the rest of the way and secure. Possible with one person but easier with two. The quickest way to get it off is to free it off at the back and pulling it forward over the bonnet.

It packs away quite neatly and is lighter an more compact to store than it would appear when it's on the roof. If possible we leave it on to dry but if needs be we pack it wet. It sheds water well so this is not a big issue, but we do try to unpack it to dry asap. But at least the Cali canvas is going down dry. We don't let the inside touch the ground, and we fold it in on itself to prevent any risk of gravel or grit getting in and scratching the paintwork.

The Mutze is fixed by a number of bungees that loop round the jobbies [technical term?] that sit in the rails on the side of the van. You can just see one at the rear off-side by the awning in the picture above. On the awning side it is supplied with a bungee that runs front to back, and we have also added a couple of extra bungees front and back to tension the foot of the canvas front and rear and reduce the likelihood of water coming in again. These all attach to the 'jobbies' too.

Of course there's nothing to beat Mediterranean weather an keeping the Mutze neatly packed away, but for all other conditions for us it's a must buy

Great post Chris thank you.

It looks like it is a well made product and does the job well. :thumb

We went for the mutze cap in the end and just received ours from Ulli last week. It's very well made and fits neatly in the tailgate inside one of the chairs so no worries about storage issues. We couldn't decide between the Pucer and the Mutze but in the end went for the Mutze due to its size since we won't be using roof bars often. Ulli also does matching awning side panels which look great so this might be the next decision.

And it looks great in red on our black van. We also add the Khyam motordome when we camp in one spot for a few days! 180DSG

Looks very smart mate. Where did you get the mutze from?

Khyam Kamper Cosi is also available in the Uk seen one on site and looks good for under 200 quid :) also worth a look is the Vanorak, Uk made but 400 quid..... Us we made our own from some ripstop off Ebay for 30 Quid :)

We recently spent 2 weeks in Cornwall and one of those weeks was spent in Porthcothan/Cornwall during the recent storms. Luckily we took our mutze cap since it does not take up any storage space and it really was great. It wasn't easy to put on due to the gale force winds but under normal conditions it is fine. The cap stopped a lot of the wind noise and in particular it stopped the rain ingress. Before we put the cap on we were seeing water dribbling through the canvas due to the driving rain.

Thumbs up for the Mutze !
