My 2006 California has gone in for an MOT and service today and I asked them to look into why the ESP light was on and sort it.

So, they tell me that the likely cause is the ABS pump (they are doing some more research) and that it feeds both systems and also that it will fail the MOT because of it ?

They also tell me a new ABS pump will be circa £2k !

So, has anyone else had this and can anyone shed any light on it ??

Any help much appreciated :thumb

If your issue is diagnosed as a ABS pump failure, ... These are repairable ... Several years ago I had similar quote £2K for a BMW ABS pump, (known fault, sticking motor brushes), removed the pump and valving assembly unit and sent it to a specialist company in Derbyshire, (ecutesting.com) repair cost if memory serves me £260. The pump was returned after a couple of days by post, I refitted it bled the brake system, and vehicle has worked fine ever since. So try a search for specialist overhaul companies.

Is this a main dealer or an independent?
Has it been scanned and the fault listed in the scan?
As well as the pump is can be brake pressure sender or a wheel speed sensor.

Thanks for the replies.....its been diagnosed by an independent garage who have looked after it for me for a few years - they've had it on the diagnostics, but I didn't ask them for the code that came up.

I have been on the ecutesting.com website, and that looks encouraging :thumb

I will take these thoughts to the garage in the morning and see where we get to.

There has been lots of issues with the ABS wiring loom where it enters the vehicle from the rear wheels, turns out VW know about this issue but won't admit to it, the wires get damaged & then play havoc with the ESP ABS warning lamps, there is lots of info on the T4 Forum so might be worth a read, its an easy fix so maybe look into it before more expensive options.

Had the same problem intermittent on my last t5 , warning lamp on at various times , then not on for days ! In short after some time with a laptop , changed n/s rear wheel speed sensor also removed inner plastic wheel arch . The wiring for the sensor is a twisted two core cable that comes from the axle round the chassis section then in through a rubber grommet in the van . Check for corrosion or breaks in the loom , good luck

ABS pumps can be susceptible to corrosion. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. The fluid should be changed on a regular basis, normally every 2 years. It's one service item on a vehicle that gets neglected as it gets older, and goes through multiple owners.

Hi. I'm in a bit of bother!
Looking into tyre pressures re. abs pump and traction warning light??
I recently replaced both rear tyres, immediately the traction control light came on and has remained on since. I mentioned it at the tyre shop but they weren't able to scan the vehicle.
Next went to local vw specialist, not main dealer, who ran a scan and reported that the abs pump shows an internal fault error code. I had it removed and sent to ECU testing (found here) who were unable to find a fault. It's now back in vehicle and warning light still on. The wiring has been checked so that's not the problem.
Today I have checked tyre pressures and put some air in both fronts.
My question is could the tyre change & slightly low front tyres be picked up by the abs system and cause warning light to come on? And if so should I be able to get the error reset?
Any thoughts/advice most welcome
Thanks
