For what it’s worth: we just had to have our Cali revalued for the next 5 years’ insurance. Our 13 year old T5 lost € 6k in value these last 5 years. That’s € 100 a month or, in our case, € 0.07 per km. Seeing all the fun and joy we have had from it, we thought that was more than worth it.
That is how we try to look at it. Not primarily as a financial investment (then index bonds are a better gamble), but as a tool to enjoy. We have often mused we have never spent so much money on a car before in all our live, but we have never had so much fun from any car, either.
If you can afford and finance one: go for it! You won’t regret it.
