Hi - I've got a 2006 T5 2.5TDI Cali with Tiptronic auto gearbox with about 75K miles - I've had her since new. Recently experiencing an intermittent problem where there is quite a dramatic judder followed by loss of power. I have to stop and then re-start which normally fixes the problem for a short while. It doesn't happen if i drive in the "manual" mode rather than fully automatic - which is why I think it is something to do with the Tiptronic. Tends to happen when i've been driving for a while rather than shorter trips around town - she pulls away fine when setting off.

Has anyone had this problem or got any ideas what it might be?

Clutches sadly.
Unlike the DSG, Tiptronic gearbox has no clutch.
The Tiptronic Volkswagen transmission has an automatic gearbox and does not have a clutch. This type of transmission uses a torque converter to replace the clutch and therefore functions just slightly differently when in Tiptonic mode.20 Aug 2015

When did you last have an oil change on the gearbox?

Interesting point re oil change. I asked about this when I bought my 08 reg 174 tdi tiptronic box with just over 50k mls. The VW van centre explained there is no scheduled oil change for these boxes, unlike the dsg later boxes. & … a change would be expensive due to the Labour involved. Knowing that “expensive” was probably a very painful experience ftom my last Cali I didn’t ask how much but suspect it might have included an element of dismantling.
so far no oil leaks from box at all.

I'll check but unless its part of a standard VW Van Centre service, I've not had gearbox oil change

Thanks for clarifying. I've seen solenoids being blamed for VW tiptronic problems on other vehicles (eg Jetta) but not sure what their function is
