Are they easy enough to fit or is it something you have to have done professionally.
How much would that be? :thanks

Simple enough to fit once you get your head round where to fit the plastic pads. Is a two person job to get it in place on the tailgate without scratching the paint.

Been there buddy.
Try these guys for your towbar. Cost me bit less than £500 to have a westfalia detachable bar coded to van.
Excellent company and very professional.

Thanks for the suggestion, I shall get bar & electrics from PF Jones http://www.pfjones.co.uk/vw-t5-transporter-oct-2009-on-detachable-towbar.html
Should be about £350 & fit myself.

Looks pretty easy to fit, but I didn't have VAGcom to code the towbar to the vehicle.
Good saving doing it yourself.

Please explain the advantages for a towbar fitted rack.

With regards to the Strada dl rack, the following advantages:

1-Removes from vehicle in about 10seconds when not in use.
2-Dosent stop the poptop from opening when loaded with bikes.
3-Rack slides back with bikes mounted to rack allowing access into the tailgate area. This is the biggest reason for me changing racks. Having travelled with both, this used to be extremely annoying when I couldnt gain access to the boot without unloading all the bikes
4-Canbe used on another vehicle with a towbar.
5-Rack won't damage paint or bodywork.

Hope this helps :cool

Just thought

6-You can fit the sportsline rear spoiler to the tailgate as there is no bike rack in the way...!!!
:D

7. Easier to get bikes onto towbar mounted rack.

Yes the hardware is easy to fit. Easy to get the wiring fitted under body & up under passenger seat. But from there on from what Stu says it is not easy & is time consuming. Both seats have to come out, wiring has to go from passenger seat to drivers seat & up to right hand end of dash.

I don't have Vagcom or vcds either, but a few members do & I shall be asking one of them to code it for me when I fit mine !!

I have got a towbar, but I still prefer the original VW one.

1-Not necessary to remove when not in use.
2-Always available when required.
3-Poptop can still be opened with 3 bikes mounted.
4-Tailgate can still be opened with 2 bikes mounted.
5-Rack won't damage paint or bodywork, when correctly mounted.
6-Possibility to use towbar as towbar.

Never lift the tailgate with the bikes on...!!!
I did it with just one bike (lightweight bike) and I have two very small compression marks on the tailgate. You will only notice this with the rack removed.

Also a bugger to clean the tailgate properly as it's sitting there in the way. Plus after sitting on the back of a van for a few years you will find the elements take their toll on the rack.

Each to their own, but having owned had both I wouldn't touch another VW or any other body mounted rack.
:thanks

I think genuine VW bike carrier rack makes it look more like a California, anything else tends to make it looking like a VW T5 conversion.

Just my personal viewpoint
