This morning key in the ignition turned it to start the van and it broke off the key shaft in the lock - the remote bit in my hand.!!!! Removed for ignition with a pair of players.

The shaft is complete the remote is complete the bit that flips the key over has fractured. Given the cost of a new key any thoughts on repairing/replacing the flip bit of the key.

2 options.
Surf key, but you would have to have the Remote next to it for the Imobilizer function
Or, I believe you can get, on eBay or direct from firm, an empty remote with key cut and you transfer across the electronic circuit board and battery off your original remote.

You could try Timpsons or auto specialising locksmith.

Matt O’Driscoll (aka ‘VW Keyman’) 07804 753022 can solve most problems.

I had the same happen on my Golf (same key type) and a local auto locksmith cut a new key part and fitted it to the remote. It was around £50 iirc. Have a look on local Facebook groups, you should find one local to you.

If it is just the blade that has broken you can replace the blade. If you look at the key fob there is a small roll pin holding the key blade to the fob. You can only see the roll pin when the key is open about 90 degrees.
Once
You have the key out of the lock a lock smith should be able to cut a new key on to a blade.
Then you just need to tap out the roll pin remove the old bit of the key, fit the new blade and tap in the roll pin.

Exactly the same thing happened to me last week! Remote still works and key is fine - they’re just no longer connected together! I guess the joint fatigues over time but it’s 16 years old now so not a bad innings. I was gonna try my local Timpsons but thanks to all for the other options / recommendations

There are businesses on a multicoloured auction site who will make a spare /replacement from a photo (both sides of the key (if you don’t know the key number) once they have made the key they post it to you & will give you the key number for future reference - note this applies to T6 or older (i believe T6.1 key differs from T6)

search the auction site :

Our local key-cutting place cut a new key and coded it and fixed the broken key into a head for £54. which I can use as a surf key
