We spent a month looking for all the spec we wanted on our second hand California, but then thought we were wasting good Cali camping time by waiting and just went for our ideal colour and engine size and figured we could add any missing spec later down the line.

During our first year of ownership we have managed to nearly complete our modifications, so we now have our perfect Cali in the right colour etc (Grey with 180 manual)

Additions to date are:

1. Black wind out awning £200 ebay
2. Rear tailgate bike rack £440 SMG on way home from Brighton
3. DAB radio upgrade £80 ebay
4. Additional 12v outlet in top of dash £10

My current project is parking sensors. I really do not like the large VW pre 2013 sensors so have fitted the updated flush version instead.

It has been a relatively straight forward job so far, although the rear bumper was a pain to remove as the rear lights had to be removed, then panels below, spare wheel and the 11 clips holding the bumper to the bodywork!

The sensors still need painting but they are perfectly flush as you can see from the photo below. They also wire into the DAB radio for optical parking display.

Aftermarket or VW sensors? I just got quoted £81.32 for one sensor which seemed a bit steep!

Also, how did you do the 12V socket in the top of the dash?

Looks like a nice tidy job.:thumb

The parking sensors are made by Laserline, Italian company who supply certain car manufactuer's. Drilling the bumper was a little scary, especially as the new sharp cone drill went from 2mm pilot hole to 18mm in about a second!

Looking forward to getting them wired up on the weekend and the bumper back on, the Cali looks like its from a scrap yard sat on the drive way minus its back bumper and rear lights!

Had a frustrating weekend in bed with a nasty bug looking out the window at a bumper-less Cali. Today was the first day feeling a bit better so, wrapped up warm and managed to get everything back together and the sensors wired up.

Everything seems to be working as it should so will tighten everything up and get some images uploaded so anyone missing parking sensors can see that you can have the factory look without the high price tag (£120 inc cone drill for bumper)

Just one final decision to make, where to mount the internal buzzer???

Andrew.
