Now that our treasurer has arrived we are seeking insurance and so far have met with three companies all demanding we fit a Cat5 tracker, even Comfort. Any suggestions of where we get a tracker or any other insurance companies who are Cali friendly.

We use Vw Insurance, reasonable price, no tracker required.

Could it be to do with area / post code? We are with Comfort and parked on our drive, they did not ask us for a tracker

Our small Wiltshire village is very quiet and the postcode has resulted in lower premiums for the rest of our fleet. Comfort indicated that as it would be on a 15 plate then a Cat5 or 6 has to be fitted. At least with help from you folk I now know where to start looking and if it has to be then a Cat 6 works out at a third of the cost of Cat5. As far as quotes go for insurance Comfort are still the cheapest for me.

Strange, just rang Comfort and they reminded me that when i purchase on-line I should mention that a Thatcher 1 alarm is fitted and no need for a tracker.

I queried this again with Comfort and they remained adamant. Over £55,000 list price and on a 15 plate then a minimum of Cat 6 tracker. If only my local broker could get a reasonable quote on a Cali.

This happened to us, the insurers of our previously Cali would not insure the new one without a Tracker.

I went to comparethemarket.com, after entering details there was a check box to omit any insurers requiring a Tracker and LV came out cheapest in the results; in fact they were cheaper than the current insurers even with business use which previously was excluded :)

of I have looked around and have varying quotes.

C&CC - £313 (GPS tracker required)
Endsleigh (Zurich) - £420 ish
Comfort £465
LV - £490 ish

Comfort had a bit of a wobble due to an attempted theft off the drive of my Wife's X5 so had to go back to the underwriters. They stated they didn't need a tracker and the market value of our Cali is £56k

Tracker wise I'm looking at a CAT 6. However C&CC just state a monitored GPS tracker. I've found SKY-TAG which is reasonable at £125 plus (with coupon) + £75 a year.

The BMW now has the benefit of two alarms.

The problem is.........that's where the car thieves start to look.
Nice quiet villages full of nice cars to pinch!

Caravan Club - £420, no tracker. Vehicle invoice price £57000.

Tried the Caravan Club. Their quote was over £500 and required a tracker.

Looks like Comfort. The cover and terms were far better and the 36hr rule wouldn't be an issue for us. Comfort were adamant that vehicles over £55k needed a Cat1 alarm and not a tracker (The Cali does) Over 75k need the additional benefit of a CAT 6 and over 100k a CAT 5 tracker.

Many thanks for all your help. I went back to Comfort and queried why some customers were being told they must have a GPS tracker and others accepted without. At last I found somebody who confirmed that as the SE has a Cat 1 alarm no tracker is required......Insurance now sorted at under £300 and the tracker company graciously agreed to cancel my order. I could have achieved a discount if tracker fitted but at £14 against £400 it was a no brainer. Now I can afford side rails, if only I can decide on black or stainless! A week to go and it will be a long one.

Make sure you inform Comfort if you fit side rails or any other bits and bobs that may or may not be classed as a modification, at least then they can't wriggle out of any claim.

Comfort online quote asked for a tracker..so I rang them and got the same response as jeff16 ; that a tracker isn't needed because it is a Thatcham category 1 alarm
Insurance sorted
I can now attack the rest of my shopping list :thumb
