Hi all,
Yesterday, after more than three years of planning and research, my wife and I collected our dream machine. An ex demonstrator, pearl black, T5 California SE, dsg, 4Motion, Blue Motion along with all its many optional bells and whistles. We agreed to buy it a week after it had been registered at the end of June and accordingly placed our deposit. We were the first people to sit in it and as luck would have it this vehicle had every thing that we had wanted as an option, including a kitchen sink. It even had things that we wouldn't have chosen but have since realised were a good option choice, namely Sportline front bumper upgrade, stainless side bars and Autoglym Lifeshine.
Then just before we were due to collect it, the VW Emissions scandal hit the fan. Our anticipation and excitement were well and truly tainted at the last minute. However after much thought and discussion we decided that we would finish what we had started and go ahead and collect our new Cali.

We bought it from SMG at Tonbridge. From the outset we dealt with Laine Watts in sales. He was quite simply superb through out. He is a Cali enthusiast himself and really knows these vehicles inside out. He took time to explain every aspect including the problems and preventative measures to keep you out of trouble. His enthusiasm and knowledge finally sold us on Cali ownership. His handover was also extremely comprehensive and the vehicle was very well prepared. So in these turbulent and uncertain times, top marks to SMG VW and in particular to Laine Watts.

Our trip home in this vehicle was silky smooth and rattle free. We even stopped for our first picnic in our Cali on the then sun drenched Romney Marsh. In such a short space of time this amazing vehicle has re kindled our enthusiasm for the Cali and convinced us that we have made the right decision. If we had cancelled our order I feel sure that we would always have regretted it.

Also, I feel strongly that despite the actions of a those individuals at VW who felt it was acceptable to cheat and deceive, the many hundreds of thousands of VW employees world wide and the even greater numbers of people who are employed in subsidiary companies, all make great products and badly need people to continue buying VW vehicles. Having "screwed up badly", VW will now want to be more than squeaky clean in order to win back customers and to try and regain their global reputation. So whilst being bitterly disappointed in VW management, it will not put me off buying their products. They are about to become better.

Whether you agree with me or not doesn't really matter. We have made our decision and if our Cali is affected and requires a remap then we will cross that bridge if we come to it. Also, there is a lot of talk on the forum about residual values being affected. Well they may be, but as the Cali is such a brilliant design, there will always be many people who will want one therefore, IMHO, residuals should remain strong.

Sorry one and all for the length of this post.

Boris. Enjoy. Life's too short anyway. Just think of all the memories yet to be created in your new van. Nobody on their death bed ever says , "Do you know what? I think I camped / travelled / picnicked / went to festivals / had tea in plastic mugs looking at a marvellous sunset / made new friends / took the kids or grandkids on adventuress / had romantic weekends away / went exploring / went skiing / went mountain biking / went fishing etc etc etc ... too much ;)"

Very well put Borris, it's a pleasure to read a your post; congratulations! :thumb

Nicely put Borris.
We got ours from the same dealer, and they are very good.
We've got a few little things to sort out, and there are many design faults that could be improved, but there's nothing better in which to live the dream.
Don't worry about VW - this will all wash over. Looks like the Government are not going to clobber us anyway.
Residuals will be good, because I'm sure the new ones will have a big price hike, and will now be built to run like sleepy snails so everyone will want ours when the time comes:D

A lovely post Borris.

The scandal will drag on for a little while, speculation will rattle around for a little while, VW may be rocky for a while, even the German economy may have a few palpitations ... and all the time that is happening you are putting in the bank memories, memories that cannot be remapped, taxed, depreciated or measured from a tail pipe. Those memories will stay forever and may even appreciate with age.

Enjoy, smile.

Enjoy your dreamcar , that emmision scam will get sorted out ....it is not just a VW problem , just bad luck they got caught at this time....you don' t wanne know what we all been fooled at in general life not just emmisions on cars ....just life the day!

Brilliant post, can we have pictures please, your van sounds gorgeous. :bananadance

Well Borris as others have stated its a way of life rather that a money thing. It took us over 8 year to decide to go for it. The van was an extension on the house a first (the money) but we decided that the memories the kids would have and the fun would be better in a van. All cars/vans cost but I'm sure over the long run there would be little difference in financial terms and a massive smile factor.

Very nice to read this Borris. We still have 2 weeks and 6 days till we collect our ex-demonstrator, not that I'm counting of course. Like you we have watched this whole saga unfold. Neighbours asking if we are going ahead and so on.
You have got a lovely bit of weather to enjoy your new vehicle.
It will be all you hope for, and more I'm sure.
In the last few weeks I have read so many interesting tales on this forum about how many places people have gone and the sort of things they have done. The only limit seems to be ones imagination.
I hope you will update us all with how you get on.

If you make it up to N Wales and want any hints about places to visit, do get in touch. I just love the area and there is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing.

Great post Boris, and one I wholeheartedly agree with. Enjoy your adventures!

Thanks everyone for your lovely posts,
Sorry I haven't replied earlier but we have been busy fitting all the wonderful goodies that we have amassed over the last few months into Margot. The commissioning should be completed this week. It's taking rather longer than expected as the secret is now out and everyone wants to give her a full internal examination! Family, friends, neighbours and people just walking their dogs through the village seem to find her irresistible and ask for the full guided tour. This is fine but I have not explored her intimately myself yet so am not proving to be a very proficient guide.
This evening we took her out for a drive to give her a break from all this excitement. We had a wonderful cooked evening picnic in the wilds of deepest Kent whilst the sun went down. She behaved impeccably and just stood there looking utterly stunning in the low autumn sun shine whilst we knocked up a beef stew on our superb ex army number 12 field cooker (you can get them on Ebay). Well you didn't think we were going to cook a stew inside did you? That auxiliary heater is just the best gadget I have ever come across on any vehicle. Alas, her maiden voyage proper will have to wait for a couple of weeks as Nanny and Grandpops are on duty until then.
What a superb vehicle. I discovered tonight that it even mutes the radio when you put it into reverse, so as not to distract you! As much as we love our gorgeous grandchildren we could do with that feature for them at times!
I will take some photos tomorrow and post them up.

Hi again Simon,
Thanks for your kind comments. We are hoping to have a decent break later in October and as a mentioned previously, we would love to visit north Wales and visit the various steam railways. So I may take up your offer and pick your brains regarding where to go and what to see.
Many thanks
Paul

I hope that everything goes well with your collection. You wont regret it.

Here we are folks, as promised, pics of our Margot at Dover this afternoon.

It was a truly gorgeous afternoon and everyone and their dogs were parked at the NT car park above the docks. Purely by chance the only available parking place was next to this pretty 1973 VW bay window. It was owned by a nice young French couple and their two very young children (well actually they were Bretons not French!). Well the pigeons were out in force in the form of their English and our French.
They had just been to a VW meet in Brighton and explained that unlike France, they were finding places to wild camp in the south east of the UK a bit difficult to locate. Apparently Bretons are seeking their own parliament and devolution! We also discovered that French VW camper vans never have names!

It looks a lovely site for a trip out. I imagine the views of France were good too.
Margot looks like our camper except that ours has black side bars. Trying to think of an appropriate name at present, but the reg doesn't lend itself to anything obvious.
I hope you will continue to update us with your travels.
I think we might head for the North Devon coast when we pick ours up. The views from there are stunning as well.

Hi Simon,
No views of french France I am afraid, it was too hazy.
Your van sounds gorgeous. Are you having black wheels to match? Our stainless pipes were already fitted by the dealer when we first saw it. We probably wouldn't have specified them however I now feel that they improve the looks. They probably also add a degree of protection as well.
What with your love for steam trains, Thomas must be an obvious contender.
I am sure something will spring to mind. Yes I will be giving updates of Margot's adventures.
Best wishes
Paul.

I think I shall stay with the standard wheels Paul. I like a bit or rubber to cushion the potholes around the place. I have to park on the street in Bristol and the high kerb would soon spoil any really special alloys. The bigger tyres on the standard wheels will take some of the kerb scuffing.
The side pipes you have seem an excellent idea. I remembered a thread in August when someone took a corner a bit too tight and the side bar protected his cill from damage. I asked for some as an extra after reading that.
Margot looks very smart indeed. Have you explored all the fixtures yet and seen what they do? Did the bay window van owners approve of the changes in the last 42 years since their model was sold? They must be surprised at the difference in the T5 compared to theirs. I found a picture of a VW camper that my parents hired to go round Scotland in 1968. I remember some stunning views, glorious weather and lots of midges. My sister and I were up in beds in the lift up roof.
I am at present trying to find a way of running an iPod dock off a 12v supply which should work. Just have to make sure the polarity is correct. Maplins have some very handy ready made leads. VW aren't able to remove the auto cut off on the cab radio, but did agree that it was a bit silly to have a stereo that you couldn't fully use with the vehicle stationary. They said that if it was recoded it would constantly come up as a fault each time it was checked. 2 weeks and 3½ days now.

It is nice to read such a positive thread after so much guessing what is going to happen with the VW saga. We are really looking forward to being able to get out and about. Both recently retired and want to enjoy ourselves a bit. Simon

Lovely looking van, I think you have answered the question of the thread (definitely not stupid).

Does your choice of name (Margot) have a story behind it?

Hi Simon,
Your point about the wheels is a good one. Each to their own but I have never seen the point of low profile tyres on our British roads. On some of our local roads there seems to be more pot hole than road. Some are more like craters.

I am afraid I haven't explored all the features yet. You would have thought that I would be out there playing with all the toys but I intend to eke out the fun and do that slowly as I use the Cali over the coming weeks. If I tried to read those manuals in one go I would instantly glaze and forget most of it.

We didn't do a show and tell and believe or not we didn't talk that much about our VWs. The conversation was mainly about Brittany, Cornwall, their family and holiday. It was just a very pleasant relaxed chance meeting.

I too went on holiday in the sixties with my grandparents in their newish VW bay window camper. My strongest memory of that holiday was lying across the front seat in the middle of the night, dying for a pee. I can remember putting off getting out as I didn't want to wake my grandparents in doing so. I might be in a similar position again soon although alas not with my grandparents this time.

I am glad that you liked my thread. Enjoy your retirement and new Cali. Please keep us all posted on your collection a ongoing impressions and wanderings and good luck with the Ipod thing.
Best wishes
Paul

Hi Johnny,
Your right, as it turns out definitely not stupid and yes, the name Margot does have a story behind it.

We decided to call her Margot after the character of that name in the 1980's TV series "The Good Life". We felt that this purchase was the beginning of many good, life enhancing adventures, hence "The Good Life". Of course this won't mean anything to you if you haven't seen this series, but if you have, you will recall that Margot's long suffering and down trodden husband was called Jerry. Well we also have a Jerry as well. He knows his place and lives under the sink.
image.jpg
We don't have a Cali dog so my wife has knocked one up on her sewing machine!!! We have called her Geraldine after the goat that Tom and Barbara had. I suppose its a red setter, what do you think? Shes very quiet and doesn't need walking!
image.jpg
So there you have it, official proof that we are both completely and utterly bonkers.
Best wishes
Paul

Ha ha, I think to even consider the camper van life style requires being somewhere on the bonkers spectrum.

Of course I am familiar with "the good life" but I won't admit to being old enough to have seen anything other than the repeats. I like the name and I think there should always be a good reason or story behind the choice of a name as it is all part of personalising the Cali and I prefer Geraldine to Fancy alloys as a way of doing it
